Just a little note - I will be at an international conference of nasty blackhat web spammers delightfully brilliant fellow internet marketers for the next 10 days, so it may be a bit rough to post. Think good thoughts that an October Surprise moment will NOT include an attack on a plane in and out of Dublin ;)

Be well and of good cheer,

This is the kind of scary stuff I’m most worried about.

Counter-terrorism expert Richard Clarke is worried that Al Qaeda may try some nastiness to upset the election. There’s no clear evidence of a plot, but boy it sounds right up there on the possibilitometer. This would make a lot of sense, because only with the continued presence of the US in the middle east as aggressive imperialists can Al Qaeda continue to recruit with such ease. A President Obama would be all “peacy” and such, and would make hatred a much tougher sell.

Richard Clarke
U.S. intelligence and security officials are worried. They admit that there is nothing concrete that suggests another attack, but they fear that al Qaeda may try something, maybe even in the United States…

At the very least, expect another Halloween video from the scary man in the cave…

Even more likely is the possibility that al Qaeda would hope the attack would benefit John McCain. Opinion polls, which, as noted above, al Qaeda reads closely, suggest that an attack would help McCain. Polls in Europe and the Middle East also suggest an overwhelming popular support there for Barack Obama. Al Qaeda would not like it if there were a popular American president again.

TPM has the whole story HERE and it’s a worthy read, if only for us all to keep our eyes and ears open. Man I’m just gonna hold my breath till after the November election.

Holy Jamolies! Obama is unpatriotic and pals around with terrorists!

Well, at least to hear Sarah Palin talk of it. While in Colorado this morning, Palin seized on the New York Times article about former weatherman Bill Ayers and Obama (which concluded that the two men were not close) to say, “This is not a man who sees America as you and I do — as the greatest force for good in the world,” and “This is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country.”

This could be just the gift we are looking for.

Thus far, it has been rather fringy to talk about Palin and her husband Todd’s association with the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) which has been a violently anti-American secessionist group for a few decades. We are all pretty familiar now with the president of AIP’s statement, “The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred of the US Government” and “And I won’t be buried under their damn flag. I’ll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home” as well as the top-40 favorite, “I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.”

Now Obama was neither close to Ayers or a member of his anti-American group, but Todd Palin was a member of this group for years. And although Sarah was not officially a member, she courted the group for years as well, even speaking this year at their annual convention.

The main takeaway from the NYT article, if anything, is that a connection is less likely that has been bandied about. But the best part of this is that Palin has now opened the door to discussions about anti-American behavior and she has more to lose on this front than Obama.

And WOW if this doesn’t fortell what is to come in the next 40 days… it seems clear that the McSame/Pain ticket are bound and determined to use any and all methods to simultaneously try to take the presidency and destroy what little vestige of honor they had left.

Pathetic. Catch a broader version of the story at TPM.

Right. We’ve endured almost all of the election season, there are two more perfunctory debates and about 40 days of racing for the finish. What to expect?

Well, TPM has reported that the McCain camp is going almost 100% negative, trying hard to break the discussion from the economic crisis back to “how dangerous and risky a President Obama” would be. The breakdown looks like this:

  • Nearly half a million weekly is funding the ad called “Dome,” which attacks “Obama and his liberal allies” in Congress for favoring “massive government.”
  • A shade more than half a million is funding the ad called “Mum,” which attacks “Obama and his liberal allies” as “mum on the market crisis.”
  • Much of the remaining McCain money is funding a spot called “Overseas,” which says that “Barack Obama and his liberal allies are to blame” for jobs going overseas. A negligible amount of the remainder is going to a positive spot, the “Original Mavericks” ad.

Clearly, the McCain camp has moved into the desperation zone, throwing any notion of honor or bipartisanship or even decency to the wind in a last-ditch hail Mary attempt to win the election. Country first John? I think not … I’d say John McCain and his selfish hypocrisy and desire for power first.

I am reasonably comfortable that it is too late in the cycle to start an effective negative campaign – the majority of people have already made up their mind, and in my opinion, a nasty switch suddenly from McCain will be seen for what it is, rather than be listened to for message.

But this does not squelch my concern of an October Surprise – perhaps a CGId video of Obama in drag doing an alter boy in the pooter while howling like Howard Dean. Would this be effective? I’d like to hope not, but there are plenty stupid voters that can be swayed with the blowing of the wind. Who knows?

But again, perhaps I underestimate the Obama campaign and there’s an October Surprise of sorts in their own quiver – I’m not saying that Obama would stoop to outright lies and Willie Horton like politics to win, but perhaps he has been saving some of his best messages for the home stretch. Perhaps he is a politician like I am a business person… rather than sitting back, relaxing and enjoying a profitable stretch, I am more likely to push harder during good times to seal my progress and maximize my opportunity. Perhaps Obama will demonstrate even MORE vitality and precision in his effort during this last month.

Another concern that is insidious and despicable does not have its origin in either campaign or party, but ferments in the worst places of the human psyche, and lives in lower income and minority dominated areas. Here I’m talking about the voter suppression efforts, like in Georgia where there is already reports of flyers being sent out that say. “If you have a warrant, or even a traffic ticket there will be police waiting to take you in” – echoing reports from the last election of cops sitting by polling stations simply with their lights on. OH how I despise attitudes like this and the people that continue to be in love with them.

America we really, HONESTLY have the opportunity to shift direction and focus and start to work on the future, rather than holding on to the moldy peanuts that are the past (comment here if you do not know that analogy). I implore you to consider voting for our children and our grandchildren, the future health of our planet and our economy. Barack Obama and a new Democratic congress can and will implement the changes that we desperately need. This is not demagoguery, but simply an observation: the people that are behind him are all of the same mind. We’ll see more from T. Boone Pickens, we’ll hear more from Al Gore, we’ll get more innovation from the likes of Steve Jobs.

Now is the time, this is the chance. Let us not squander it.

Yes, a direct statement, but not an attack - a statement of fact.

I’ve been volleying with one of my readers, Edgar, that made the comment, “Why don’t you ever say that Obama is stupid - you only attack Palin and call her stupid.”

OK, take my politics out of it for a moment and here’s the deal. Obama is a Harvard Law graduate in the top of his class and the first African American to ever be president of the Harvard Law Review. He’s run a supernaturally disciplined and focused campaign against The Anointed One (Hillary) and defeated her. Even in a country with a huge amount of sub-dermal racism, he is pulling ahead nicely in the polls - even after issues with his Pastor and the whisper campaign that he’s not actually a Christian but is a Muslim. The trial by fire that is presidential election politics have vetted him and he has been equal to the challenge.

Taking all her other gaffes, misstatements and airbag answers out of the equation for a moment, I simply want to address a small part of the Katie Couric interview:

COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read, before you were tapped for this, to stay informed and to understand the world?

PALIN: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press for the media, I mean…

COURIC: Like what ones specifically? I’m curious that you…

PALIN: Um, all of ‘em, any of ‘em that um have been in front of me over all these years, um…

COURIC: Can you name any of them?

PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country where it’s kind of suggested it seems like, wow how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, DC may be thinking and doing, when you live up there in Alaska. Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

So now having stripped away any possibility of a “Gotcha” press question, or obscure international reference or even national issues, we simply want to know what she reads. She cannot even name a single one - she reads “all of ‘em.” Anyone with half a brain would even have LIED and said “Time” or “Newsweek” or something else they had seen at the grocery store on the way out… she can’t even dance to THAT silly of a question!

How long will we suffer this utter farce to continue? This is the our nation and our national future we’re talking about here! Some on the right will talk about Obama needing on-the-job training… well at least he’ll be starting with post graduate work. With Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency, we’re talking about remedial reading!

So, Edgar, if you’re reading: she’s a moron and has earned the title.
