... see who is logged into a computer OTHER than the primary user?
I've got a client's computer that continually says "There are users connected to this computer ... " when I shut the machine down. Even when it is on my privatenet, behind a firewall and as far as I can tell there is nothing shared!I don't think it's really doing anything, but the client is a doctor and as such, totally panicked. Any help appreciated... /p perkiset
... symptom: it seems to happen after the
machine has been "slept" or stood by...thedarkness
start/control panel/administrative tools/computer management/shared folders/shares, sessions, open files

Thanks TD!

If its not "files" being shared, but a TS session, and its when you are terminal serviced into the
machine, some versions of windows will report that, even when YOU are the session, and YOU are the one rebooting it. But if your all patched up, then that shouldnt be it.what was it? thedarkness
np, and I'm not a windoze boy ok?
lol, this makes me think of our (meaning lots of us, not just you and me Perk) discussions over languages, are they dead, are they dinosaurs, which one is "the best". At the end of the day I've used a hell of a lot of different OSs, been exposed to and dabbled in a lot of languages, used literally 100s (1000s?) of apps and, at the end of the day, who cares? "The warrior makes use of what is at hand" Sometimes the job dictates the tool, sometimes the environment, sometimes economic factors, sometimes legacy. What works, works, no matter what the flavour. It is nice to be in a position to dictate what should be used, but that is a luxury we are not afforded all the time. Use the tools that are available and learnabout what you have to work with.I know a lot about Windows because of my exposure to it through necessity and through sheer brute force of numbers, doesn't mean I love it, doesn't mean I hate it, it just is. LOL, maybe we should move this into the Tao section although I think that sentiment is more buddhist. Cheers, td perkiset
Aaaarrrrghhhh %#$% f$%32 Goddamm$%#@ %$#.
I can't reproduce it now. I am going to that office tomorrow and I'll try to reproduce the conditions that she first had the experience. It was also behind a firewall and secure. But a question: If I'm not sharing anything <that I can see BTW - I have no idea if I'm doing this right anymore> what else could be connected? This is a brand new Dell with XP Pro. Checking services, there is one called Terminal Services, it's set to Manual start but interestingly it's always on, immediately after power up - I'm going to speculate that this is because some dependent app fired it up. There's no way the Doc could've fished this machine so quickly (about 3 days).Checking sharing and permissions for the Shared Folder it is not shared either. I think that you're onto sumthin NBs and I speculate that its a shitty rather than interloper. Thanks, /p nop_90

There are actually a few things, that it could be. gimme a buzz tomorrow if you want.
the short version is that probably something is opening a file and keeping it open. or a piece of software is "logging in" as a authoritative account to perform permission based actions. This is a little unlikely, but I do know alot of Dr software sucks bad, so who knows. thedarkness
quote author=perkiset link=topic=90.msg395#msg395 date=1177389391 But a question: If I'm not sharing anything <that I can see BTW - I have no idea if I'm doing this right anymore> what else could be connected? Could be, as nuts suggests, an errant app either not closing handles or not logging out when the machine shuts down. It could also be something connecting to an administrative share (//machinename/c$, d$, etc.) or and IPC share such as a distributed backup app (backup server backs up clients scenario).Anyway, good luck tracking it down and happy ANZAC day for tomorrow everyone. Cheers, td perkiset
OK - day 2, no repeat of the behavior. The only thing different (I believe) is the number of and order of programs she ran. I am thinking that you folks are on it and it is a program that's latched onto something and won't let go... she has a bunch of Remote Desktop icons on her desktop already... she does not know the password for any of the locations she's trying to get into, but it does connect and wait for a login... I'm wondering if there's something in all of that which might've confused the box.
Anyhoo, I'm gonna consider it closed until it rears its ugly head again... thanks again boys /p nutballs
ah......
was the error message/warning told to you from memory by her? if so, and she aint the brightest computer user, what you just said answered the question. she had a TS session open, but minimized probably, even if she wasnt successfully logged in. it would give a warning that you have open user sessions, or something like that, and they will be disconnected upon logout/reboot/whatevershewasdoing. perkiset
... even if she was the one terminalling into somewhere else?
And yes, the vast majority of the instances were from her memory - the only was that I saw was when I first booted her machine up... but upon reflection, I cannot tell you if it was a clean boot or unsleep kind of thing... if it was an unsleep and she had done something like this it would fit your pattern...... although my head gets loopy thinking that the problem was she had a user open on her machine when she was a actually trying to log into another but it didn't happen and thenetwork changed and she ... oh fishit.thedarkness
If you have the option checked, rdesktop will connect to your local drives from the remote
machine whether you have them shared or not, under options/local resources in RD client. You could see if any are set up to connect these automatically.Cheers, td perkiset
![]() The icons were copied from her previous notebook... there could be allkindsa shit in there then from what you're saying... best call the good Doctor tomorrow bright and shiny... if she does actually get in somewhere and there's something going on that I am unaware of I'll look like a turd in the pool... nutballs

lol. I was there way before geek squad.
I sat behind the counter, people brought their busted stuff, i told them i couldnt fix it, they bought a new thing. it was quite easy once i figured it out. one store manager yelled at me to get out on the floor when i wasnt busy. then yelled at me when a customer was at the repair desk and I wasnt there. That started my smart ass career... "so you are saying you want me to be in two places at once? please teachme if that is possible, because that would be great for school." That got me a "review" with the GM, which resulted in me asking about the progress of cloning technology. amazingly, I lasted a full year.perkiset
Prolly took them that long to figure out what you had asked, morons.

I did level 1 help desk for several years.........
"Tell me sir are there lights on the machine? Are the lights on? Perhaps you might try depressing the switch on the front. The lights are on now, very good. You should be able to log on as normal shortly. Yes, they are very complex aren't they" *hangs up* Moron!Cheers, td nutballs
ah yes, the "is it plugged in" question. They always got offended and wouldn't look, but it always turned out to be the reason.
