I saw that Dell has decided to let their customers buy PCs with XP on it for the remainder of the year. I was planning on buying a new PC soon, but I didn't want to have to go to

ApplauseVista

so this is good news to me.

Anybody here have Vista and love/hate it?

Paging Amoun777...

He is slammed with work right now but would have some real response to this I think... I'll ping him...

I have never used Vista but a few friends of mine have and for the most part they hate it.  The one guy liked it at first but after using it for a few days decided he had much Vista hate.

I would personally wait until it was out for about a year before i even considered going to it.  Gives MS a solid year to actually finish the product although we know it still won't be "finished" by then.

Oh yeah... nutballs had a similar experience...

Oh i can weigh in on this big time.

Fish VISTA. it is not ready AT ALL.

If you are just a guy with a 'puter, sure vista is fine. but if you do anything beyond surfing the

net

, wait a while. Most software has some kind of issue under vista. I turned off the stupid security features because it was just getting so annoying. My virus software didnt work (though it supposedly does now). Photoshop CS2 kinda runs like it should be wearing a helmet, and not because it plays sports... Even something as simple as CuteFTP didnt work right.

most of the problems are security related when it comes to software.

hardware... ugh. drivers are non-existant for anything but mainstream stuff. even my brand new DELL had driver issues. even with the VISTA drivers they released. LOL

te

lnet

is gone as well.  Applause (though you can get it, but its not in the installation)

I have Ultimate, and it has media extender capabilities built in, so my xbox360 can play movies. or not... depends on how the gremlins feel that day.

The file structure is a little changed, for the better, but not worth the upgrade.
interface... meh its a computer desktop.
sidebar... turned it off cause it kept crashing.
animated desktop... hey cool, im bored now.
new Alt-Tab thingy... OK this one wins for me. I loved it. but not by an stretch enough to justify the problems.
general operation of it was fast. but then again, I have a 4gig 2proc core2duo box. but it did seem faster than XP. I did not have the slow boot times people have complained about.

the bad part is, that early adopters really shouldnt upgrade. Yet, people like my mother and father probably should. it would protect them a little better. For me though, and probably most of you, the security features actually increase the danger. I spent so much time clicking OK,Yes,Sure,WTF,Whynot,Go,Approve,Whatever, that frankly if something popped up and said "hey, can i fish up your computer" I probably would have clicked YES without realizing it.

It was overkill.

There were quite a few nifty things to play with, but that does not make a good work environment.

wait till SP1 for sure.

What a pain. No te

lnet

 ? what were they thinking?

Interesting point about it being better for n00bs than experienced computer users. Are they lying about the new security model being "As good or better than Unix?" Sounds as though their security model is to put the blame for something that slips into your

mac

hine on YOU for having accepted it.

nutballs

I dont really know anything about the actual details of the security methods and protections.

what they did was overcomplicate it though, so yes they could easily just say, your the dumbass that let that malware in.

So if you rarely install, your good.

but like me, who does technology and solution research for my clients, i install a LOT of stuff. most geeks do, but i am sure I am towards the highest end of that measure.

Is hyperterminal still there nuts?

It has a te

lnet

client built in and you can make it the default client.

I'm more excited about FC7 (at test 3) or etch (released 8th April) than I am about Vista.

Cheers,
