Is a question I always ask potential new staff.

it doesn't matter to me what the answer is, but it is important they have an answer.

So.... What is your favourite

perl

  module?

dirk

Hi JasonD!

I don't have ONE favourite module. Here are some I use very often:

Perl

 ::Tidy - Parses and beautifies

perl

  source

Perl

 ::Critic - Critique

Perl

  source code for best-practices

CGI - Simple Common Gateway Interface Class
DBI - Database independent interface for

Perl

Date::Calc - Gregorian calendar date calculations

Bompa

Hi Jason, nice to see you here.

My favorite is LWP  Applause

It's really the only pm I use.  I don't like

perl

modules much.  The documention is everywhere online,
but it's all the same man page mirrored in 1,000 places LOL, and not written for beginners.

Tutor

ials and *working* examples are scarce.

So, a

perl

module would have to save me a week's time of coding before I'd use it or save me
from socket

programming

  LOL.

Fatty

It's either WWW::Mechanize or Data:Applauseumper...  Hrm, if I get 2 I may as well make it 3 and take HTML::TreeBuilder

JasonD

I have to agree about LWP and also the Mech.

Mech is really built on top of LWP so I can't knock either of them.

I absolutely LOVE Moz Mech and Win32 Mech though as you get access to the DOM as well Applause

I never use

perl

 .
Perhaps someone should throw up a "why" for those of us, like me, who know

PHP

and 10 other languages who need to be convinced that it is actually worth their time

learn

 ing  a new one!

dirk

I'm not too familiar with

PHP

  to compare it with

Perl

 .

Generally I would say we should have a look at:

- architecture
- functions
- modules
- performance
- security

If you don't miss anything in your current languages there is no need
to

learn

  a new one.

But you could also

learn

Perl

just because you are interested in

learn

 ing  new languages.

JasonD

If your current language does what you want it to then don't bother

learn

 ing

PERL

though when

Perl

6 finally launches you will be able to code in any damn language you want to. Applause
