I wanted to add a new account to my system today, and did the normal System Preferences and clicked on Accounts and the screen just went blank. Rebooting did not solve the problem. AFter a quick google I found a thread that mentioned the same problem - in his case, it was the Oracle installer that had created an account without a real name. In mine, it was MySQL. The lack of a real name was enough to screw up the Accounts in

OS-X

  ?!?!?! Amazingly ill thought out there boys. >Applause

Here's the fix:
nidump passwd /[/pre]will show you all the users file. In my case, here was the culprint line:
mysql:*:503:mysql::0:0:::/bin/tcsh[/pre]I fixed it with this:
nicl . -create /users/mysql realname "MySQL"[/pre]
which gives the mysql user a real name of MySQL. The new line looks like this:
mysql:*:503:mysql::0:0:MySQL::/bin/tcsh[/pre]
The accounts tab works fine then.

Sheesh!  Applause

No shit - this one surprised me. Good thing it's a 'nix so that it can be easily repaired...
