Having an OpenGL hardware accelerated desktop is the fishin' balls.

LOL.  Agreed.

The knoppix Iso is a bootable version of

linux

  that is the most
'auto detecting' of all..  It will boot just about ANY old computer
or new and comes complete with just about any software you
would need to install all ready to go...  Iceweasel(Firefox) with
latest java, etc blah blah

Best part is, it lives in ram, so its great to do some dirty surfing
for cheat codes, or _WHATEVER_ then unplug and any thing you
caught disap

pear

 s.

Also great to QtPart an old hard drive out of the partitions and its
MBR even real quick.  Not everyone has a 98 boot disk lying
around which is sometimes the only 'unfisher' i have been
able to use until knoppix.

"Among useful software additions is the mkbootdev script,
which allows you to create a bootable USB stick
-- a handy tool for making a USB version of Knoppix."

So before you throw out that old computer cause you
cant find the drivers, swipe the hard drive and put ram
only knoppix cd in and boot any old computer up to run with

linux

kernel 2.6.19 ... So you dont have to make the

linux

leap until your comfortable.

You can do a
knoppix-installer

from ctrl-alt-f1 and install to hd if you have
one connected (OPTIONAL)

you can even do a
apt-get dist-upgrade

and then

apt-get update

and youll have a fully functional

debian

  release
with all the hardware support of knoppix preinstalled.
all the latest

debian

  packages according to
default sources (which you can change on your journey to *nix)

Obviously will not boot nearly as fast as if it were installed locally.

nutballs

cram it on a USB key and it goes pretty well. I have done this for giggles. The

mac

hine needs to be able to boot from USB though.

Sounds like a good distro for virtuals.  Applause

knoppix is the only thing that recognizes everything on my little shuttle box. every other distro requires a bit of hoop jumping.

Knoppix STD is pretty cool... it has a WPA cracker on it  Applause

Anxious to hear of someone that has tried
Cluster Knoppix?

ClusterKnoppix is a modified Knoppix distro using the OpenMosix kernel.

    *  OpenMosix terminal server - uses PXE, DHCP and tftp to boot

linux

  clients via the

net

 work.

    * No cdrom drive/harddisk/floppy needed for the clients
openMosix autodiscovery - new nodes automatically join the cluster (no configuration needed)

    * Cluster Management tools - openMosix userland/openMosixview Every node has root access to every other node via ssh/RSAkeys
      MFS/dfsa support

    * Every node can run full blown X (PC-room/demo setup) or console only (more memory available)

Wish i had some time to see if LAMP would work with this somehow....
