Nice find Nuts... actually got a bit of pucker factor there as I started to read it...

I is right, they've fished up their share of stuff in the past, but Jonathon seems like a level headed new-age guy (in a tech, not chakra kind of way Applause ) and they've made it clear that their future is open source... so perhaps this will be a good thing.

The most compelling thing about that article to me was at the end, when it clearly illustrates how this gives Sun a foothold (BIG fishing foothold) in the DB market currently dominated by Oracle and MS... so perhaps this will be a really good thing.

Gotta tell you, I'm REALLY hoping so because I rely on MySQL a hugebunchalots and just can't have them mess it up.

Who got the money? Who "owns" MySQL?

Bet there's a lot of pissed off coders out there that have contributed major pieces of code over the years.

merged because I didn't event think about that. not only open source, but mob coded, although not so much lately i think. what would be really progressive of MySQL would be to figure out a way to distribute a percentage of the "winnings" to the contributors over the years. The bigger the contribution, the bigger slice you would get. MySQL getting the large majority though. That would be truly proving the value of open source and open contribution software i think.

perkiset

Hang on - when you contribute to the codebase of an opensource project, unless you are specifically granted rights to the ownership license you have no claim at all. The MySQL foundation owned all the rights, and the contributors got nothing but cred. Ostensibly what has happened is that Sun has ownership of the software licensing. They've made no noise that they're going to un-open-source it (that would be stupid beyond beliefe, especially since they are ABOUT open source...) and what they can say, now is that THEY are the big dog when it comes to consulting and deployment of the software - which does three things: A) gives MySQL a WAY bigger whack when presented in the board room and B) paints the software with the reliability of Sun and C) gives Sun another chunk of the LAMP stack as a one-stop shop for reliable deployment of enterprise class systems.

The more I think about it the more I like it, because this sort of extends the life and capability for projection of MySQL. It will make my job easier in some cases where someone says, "But MSSQL is a paid for product that is backed up my Microsoft..." well, the security base, although already quite strong and robust, now will be PERCEIVED as better because Sun is behind it.

I think.  Applause

I had a chance to rule the universe but i fuked it up also.
I read the book about me, it really pissed me off

i dont think you should have an expectation of renumeration upon sale of an open source project you contributed to. However, I do think you should get it anyway. And i think it would be mighty cool of the MySQL guys to do that. 1 billion is a shitload of cash, Im sure they can spare a few percent to dole out to the masses that contributed. Some guys might become millionaires, others might just get 50k. but even at giving away 10% it would still leave 900million for the main dudes, still a shitload, and frankly no different than 1 billion in the grand scheme of things.

Perk, I don't think the "Show unread posts since last visit" button is working for me as I specifically looked for a post on the subject before I posted. Anyway, no biggie, nice find by a couple of hours nuts lmao, kudos.

So the MySQL foundation gets one billion? What are they going to do with it (besides hookers and drugs)?

Cheers,

exactly! Hookers and drugs are great and all, and I wouldn't fall them. But that's a rediculous amount of hookers and drugs.
