just realized for sun servers,
ebay has some pretty cool stuff REAL CHEAP the 4500 is 600 bucks - 12x400mhz and upgradeable... Newisys/Sun V20z Opteron 244 2x 1.8GHz/8GB/72GB Server for 365$ perkiset
They're hard on the electric bill but awesome as appliances. If you can get that hosted somewhere with a nice fatty connection to the
netyou'll not be displeasedratthing
I'd recommend a 220, 440 or 880 over a 4500, since they have FC drives (faster) and are more power/heat efficient. I really like the design of the 880, it's quite easy to work on unless you have to replace the FC backplane.
The V20z and related are also nice, they have a built in LOM-type thing (can't remember the "official" name, it's been a couple of years) for out-of-band remote management that runs a cut down embedded Linux(ironically, on an IBM POWER chip) so it has full blown ssh. The command set is a little wonky, but allows you to do more than the older LOMs.And yeah, I'd love to have a 32 core Sun Fire. Solarisis my favorite flavor of *NIX.=RT= |
