I decided to get off my arse and make a productive tool for me to use.
My aim was to create a tool that could give you information about a certain niche, suggest keywords for it.
And analyse the difficulty of ranking for it.

Currently it will grab the top X results off google for a given set of keywords
And will grab the number of backlinks for each one.

Does anyone have any cool ideas for me to put in it?
I was thinking of making it public [to probably friends, i.e. you lot] once its done so anything you might wanna see in let me know.

i wouldnt just base it on google.

i would maybe get info from all 3(or 4) and allow each to be weighed differently depending on user preference.

i kind of do this in a manual way using the two google keyword tools

I search google with a keyword i want to go after.
I then get the top 1 result URLs.
I then use those urls in the Site Related Keywords tool of the google keyword tools, for each URL.
google gives back the keywords for each url.
I copy those into excel.
I then combine them to remove dupes.
Then I run each word through google, getting page counts.
and thats where I stop.

What I would add is:
the page counts from each engine.
The link counts from each engine for each URL resulting from each phrase search
the PR of each URL resulting from each phrase search.

I was hoping to do a keyword cloud, so you could see what keywords were used on the sites, but also have an idea of frequency.

At current you give it some keywords
It gives u top X sites off google, their backlinks, their alexa rank, and suggests other keywords to use and their estimated traffic for a month.

I've almost finished a little algorithm to estimate earnings based on average CPC and estimated traffic for a site.
So hopefully when its done youll be able to pop in some keywords, get an idea of how hard itd be to rank for those keywords, and hw much traffic you could expect, and how much money youd make.

All in, that would be a prize of a system. LOVE to hear how it goes for you and any gotchas you catch for others so inclined.

<slighthijack>I am getting deeply involved with Omniture web analytics systems... enormously expensive but I think it will be the answer to many of the questions you pose above in a bog way. I'll post also if I see something that would spin gears.

Another easier way I've done this....

I have a huge database of OVT scrapes that I used to do for domain name buy/sell back in the day.  I do a random pick out of it, do a google search, and then count the number of ads that show up.

At first I did it really easy....I just looked for the "more sponsors" link and nixed those words.  Now I get more specific and count the ads returned and save them.

Typically I would check out the ones with 5 ads or 6 ads....usually enough that they are paying decent...but few enough that competition is low.

This method has served me well for WH sites and for BH sites.
