The best single source for Force.com information is here: http://wiki.developerforce.com/index.php/Documentation.  Creating a free development account (organization) gives you access to the best introduction book available.  It's called Force.com Fundamentals and it's a 20 meg .pdf download after you log in.

The Force.com Developer guide is typically step #2 in the process.  The two bibles after that are:

- Visualforce Developer's Guide (http://www.salesforce.com/us/developer/docs/pages/index.htm)
- The Force.com Apex Code Developer's Guide (http://www.salesforce.com/us/developer/docs/apexcode/index.htm)

These are specific references for the front-end (Visualforce) and the back-end (Apex).  For the most part they're all I use these days but the other two are recommended to get an understanding of the platform.  I included the HTML links but recommend downloading the .PDFs if you're interested in learning it.

Have you read it yet? Looking at the Amazon reviews, I'm not sure it's more than a historical, rather than a gear spinner... it's Kindle price is only $10, but don't need another iBook on the iNightStand if it's not really going to blow the brains open... thoughts?

Over 1/2 way through and can't put it down.  It reads a little like a novel and also like an interesting road map to the future of the Internet - which is obviously in the direction of cloud computing.  It's something to enjoy on your next vacation or when you're relaxing somewhere.  Very easy to consume and very well written and interesting - IMO. 

I actually got it free after attending his webinar a few weeks ago.  I downplayed it in my mind as a useless free book and was stunned by how good it was.  Then realizing it's momentum to the top of reading lists I wanted to share my find with the Cache.

No, I wouldn't call it a real gear-spinner but I'd call it a clarifier.
