I had this topic in another part of forum, but i think it belongs here. I have found Windows VPS with 512 mb RAM $46USD with nethosting to $85CDN in Canada. I really just want to run a couple of windows PC programs remotely. However, if I get VPS will move domains to it I am totally confused bout the options to look for and even how much RAM I'll need. I know that the one program will not run on a PC with Only 512 RAM cause I tried it on an old laptop just to see. It runs slowly on a old desktop with one G, maiinly because of proxies.
Right now am using dreamhost and they have vps but its linux. I've never used windows hosting so that is worrying. Any advice would be welcome. Make it simple? Thanks

You are better off running Windows programs at home if you have a good connection, imo. 512 MB of ram should be enough for ANY one program. Must be something else going on there.

Assuming you have hi speed Internet at home, it probably only costs about $50/month to upgrade to faster bandwidth under a business service. Just keep that in mind.

If I remember the thread mentioned, maggiemae is interested in a vps because her internet connection is not all that good. I would say a 512mb vps should be sufficient to start with, you could always upgrade to a better package at a later date if needs be, most vps providers will swap you over without much fuss.

Right now I use broadband in Canada, but use satellite at our home in Mexico. This November I may be changing to Mexican "highspeed" infinitum and it is supposed to be unlimited but I am afraid they might not like me running programs 24/7.
I know this is a real noob question, but is it possible to install a pc program on vps on Linux server. That would be the easiest for me right now because I could just upgrade existing service.

My advice originally was for Maggie to think about a VPS machine just to avoid the upload troubles and bi-country issues of going back and forth between Canada and Mexico, as well as the slow connection speed while in MX.
Personally, that's how I'd do it, because I don't want to be tied to a certain locale. If I have a bunch of stuff that needs to run full time then I want to be abstract of it. All my workhorse machines are in the racks, because another point is that I'm pretty certain I don't want to have any traffic I am ... ah, concerned about, being tracked back to my residence.
Another option here MM, is to simply get a GoToMyPC account and access your Canada computer while in MX. The downstream will be fast enough (the largest issue with a GTMP account) and then you could have the best of both worlds - high speed access, something running full time and be local when you're there - but get access to it while you are gone. You'd probably want to invest in an IP power cycler then as well, so you could reboot the machine remotely and still get to it, since you'd not have someone there to reboot it for you.

Don't use crappy branded bloatware.
openVPN (or Hamachi if you want zero-config) + any VNC client > gotomypc

Fair enough. But GoToMyPC is about as idiotproof as you're going to find, and sometimes cash and bloat are worth it.

I am thinking VPS machine, even if I have to follow the (complicated instructions to put windows on linux at dreamhost for me). Reason - when we leave here we blow the lines with a compressor, pump in antifreeze and let the place freeze up for the winter. I live out in the sticks!!

Just give a shout if you get stuck. It's even easier if your server is using Ubuntu or Debian.

If you can fire MacroShaft and get into a *nix system, then you'll find that things run much more reliably. Don't know if "the programs you run" are scripts, or portable or the job is transferable, but VS is right: if you can drop MS and go *nix, you'll be way happy.
