Okay.. my first real site .... im still sorta new in this arena...
a run down of my thinking:

1) tar the whole thing up through ssh
2) ftp the tarball to the new site
3) untar the whole thing through ssh

voila... maybe change a few links/paths or whatever, badda bing, badda boom, right?

Is there a better way to move a site?

Only other things would be
you need to also copy your httpd.conf website settings, or wherever you have your website settings.
Also if there is a database, just make sure you can connect from the new machine.

Nice.. it worked.. some of the files are giving me parse errors now...

on random lines that didnt error on the source site.

For example a line with :

 case 'edit':

has a parse error on it... and thats all it says is: parse error.

Only thing i can guess is source was linux
and target is windows hosting... could this be a crlf difference
hosing the php scripts because windows wants chr(13) and chr(10)
while the source maybe only used chr(13)?

Yep it's the crlfs. Though I don't remember which way it's supposed to be.

Ok moved the whole site to windows..  ASP/IIS underneath it and OMG its been 10 years.

Okay 10 years ago i worked on an asp server with these 500 errors no one could put a finger
on....

moved *AGAIN* to linux .... faster than shit through a goose and voila no 500 errors.

Id just like to take this public worldwide opportunity to just say what dickhead wankers i
think the people are at go daddy hosting ... They just stick their fingers in their ears and
start shouting, 'la la la la'

When i realized he wasnt even listening to me, i asked him a question about the first option
in a drop down on the control panel...

Me: "is there an option to $x?"

Him: "La la la la la al not listening no thats not possible."

Me: "So theres no way to $x through godaddy?"

Him: "La la la la i cant hear you la la la la"

Me: "Well how come its the first option in the control panel, proves your not listening. <click!>"

Him(to dialtone if they exist still.):  "La la la la la la la la la la la la la".

Flag me if im outta line here but for the world wide record:

GO DADDY HOSTING SUCKS DONKEY BALLS.

This is why I always keep few things in mind when designing website/webservice:
- Paths & database config must be read from config file
- If it requires anything else than basic PHP, MySQL & javascript like external programs get VPS

This way you can move site by tarballing files and dumping database OR you can just take image of Linux and install it to new place.
