After testing a few hours I realized that going very low with usleep in this particular situation might not be a brilliant idea.

I guess most here have burnt a mother board one day. the sad thing about it is that in most instances you have to throw it away because of this one 10 cents capacitor (the actual burned thing)  that cannot be easily unsolder-ed.

While running curl_multi with usleep(100), I could hear a small whistle in the box around the box which is not usually a good sign re the above.

Paranoid? definitely, but setting  usleep(2500) => flat cpu, no noise !

Shocked wait ... you change the wait length a usleep and you get/don't get a whistle? Are you sure it's not the fan, responding to more/less work on the proc?

this reminds me of a funny story from work long ago when I had coworkers and such...

Programmer would get pissed because his computer would make noise whenever he worked on his big ass visio document. But rarely when working on anything else. It was HUGE. So to see large chunks of it you had to be zoomed way out, making everything small. So... he had to lean in to see the text...

he leaned on his desk to get closer.

Basically, he was tipping the computer just enough, so a cable was touching a fan inside, making a noise (granted it was a very strange sounding noise). Took him months to figure it out.

Tunnel vision is funny.
