OK, i have 2 ideas for iPhone apps which seem to be missing from the store, so i want to start tinkering.
I have a powerPC based mac, and I can install the SDK onto it, with some hacking it seems. However, to avoid that issue with every update of the SDK, i am wondering if I can do something else.
My wife have a Intel Mac Pro.
Is it possible for me to VNC into a seperate space or even a seperate login, without affecting her being logged in? basically I am talking virtualization here, but I was wondering if its possible with spaces. That way she could work, And i could learn and tinker.
otherwise its the PowerPC which frankly is giving me issues on many levels. VNC just drops me and never lets me reconnect for example, though that is possibly my virus software getting in the way. And the fact that the SDK wont run without some tinkering on the PowerPC is annoying.
is there another option I dont know about?

I'm thinking that there must be other VNC servers out there that will provide the same, because they're using Fast User Switching as opposed so something really different. The space notion is interesting, but based on the way VNC and the Apple Remote Desktop work, I don't think it would work the way you want it to. |

that looks like what I am looking for, cool thanks. though this quote made me laugh: "This doesn't duplicate your hardware. i am doing this now.
All i had to do was login as the seperate user, and start vine server as a different
display in my case its display 5 so the vnc port becomes 5905 and you just
need to leave that user logged in and your good to go. Dont buy that
i have three users using the same computer (two through vnc)
running at all times and you cant even tell.

interesting. I will have to try that at some point and see how that works. I cant yet though cause my wife is hardcore on a project, and if i fuck anything up, i will die just from the glare of hatred...

I tried this with ubuntu and xp to no avail... way to go.. on both whenever i would switch users it would drop the vnc connection..

Bah duh bah bah buhhh mac lovin it.... @jammaster82: Its probably because neither of those actually work.  @jairez: Okay i got apache installed with mamp on port 8888 it wouldnt take to port 80 cause i believe apache is already installed in the 'web sharing' stuff, (system preferences -> (network) sharing -> Web Sharing Question is, jairez did you have to overcome this as well and if so, how? |

Ho there... OSX = Ubuntu with a less customizable interface and no package manager.
Also, unless you install OSX86, you paid way too much for your hardware.

It's pretty easy to set up.
I'm not a mac hater. Am I jaded for not thinking highly of a computer that is made for idiots who can't do something simple like turn on a computer?
Actually, when I have the spare cash to toss around and I'm not so anal about configuration options, I will buy a mac. Right now, I can spend 1/4 of the money and have *better* hardware, and then install Gentoo and have a pretty much identical system, but free of the bonds of closed-source software.

um, Ubuntu is a Linux tho and OS-X is a BSD... there's a pretty reasonable amount of difference there, no? "paid too much..." LOL ... for what you get, the Mac line is a fine deal. F'reals. |

Meh. They're both UNIX, basically. "paid too much..." LOL ... for what you get, the Mac line is a fine deal. F'reals.
I disagree. 3 thousand dollars is a lot for a laptop with mediocre hardware. I just bought my wife a laptop for less than half of that that has much nicer specs than a macbook pro even if it's fully decked out. I could build a desktop that would best your Mac Pro for about 1,500 bucks man. And then I would compile 64 bit Gentoo from source on it and it would REALLY best your Mac Pro  To each his own though. Like I said, when I reach that balance where I am not as anal and time is that much more valuable than money, which I'm sure will come someday, I will most definitely buy a Mac. |
