So you could write drivers for it?
You can see the whole dir tree? right down to root? I know I can on my jailbroken phone, but I haven't dinked around with the SDK yet to know if you can or not.

The SDK is simply an Objective C class library man. It's GCC compiled on the Mac. Jailbreaking does not change the OS or the phone, it simply allows you to move things over to it and execute them, which was a denied feature of the OS - not an addition by the hackers.
So the SDK exposes virtually everything about the phone. For example - you are warned against it repeatedly and heatedly, but you are physically capable of writing daemons that run full time. I did not understand why they pushed so hard against it until I read over the thermal management issues - there is a *lot* of processing going on in that little box and heat is a real problem. So one of the ways that the OS was tweaked was to slow down and minimize processing wherever you can - otherwise you burn battery and get the processor too excited. So the guidelines specifically argue that anything that continually processes (like a busy-waiting daemon written by a n00b) would be a horrible thing to put on the phone. I'd argue that if you knew your stuff and your daemon was no more demanding than the email retriever (ie., asleep until specifically needed for short bursty processing) you'd be all good.
The SDK came down to me as an extension library for XCode - the programming environment for the Mac itself - it's more or less another type of compiled target and more libraries. Extensions include access to the accelerometer, proximity sensor, positional gyros and such... which is shy a lot of folks are talking Sony PSP / Wii competitor.
It's bigger and cooler than you think man.

Kind of, but misleading.
As of 1.14, the jailbreak includes and installation of the BSD subsystem, which unlocks the OS and makes it completely usable. I won't believe that the SDK functions exactly that way until I see it. Forgive me for not having much faith, but Apple has not impressed me so far.

LOL ... then you're not looking deep enough. Do not be fooled by propaganda, whether positive or negative. Try downloading the SDK and have a look.
Side note - if Apple doesn't impress you, who does? That's a wicked high bar you must have there

Their products impress me. Their douchebaggish attitude towards hackers and open source does not.
