It appears as if the apple kit is using the gcc toolchain
(just what i have seen from a casual search from google)

If u have worked with QT, from trolltech, it is pricey but it is 100% cross platform with windoze, linux and apple.
Also when it comes to working with GUI toolkits, QT is the best, they have a ton of experience.
Also tons of linux programmers are familiar with QT.
There are also bindings to QT for major scripting languages, these with small effort (if it has not already been done) could be ported to qtopia.
So that means nokia with a small effort can bring all the major QT apps to thier products.

On the other hand apple sdk appears to be using something called xforms.
(probably is a good product, but people are unfamiliar with it).

if they had purchased trolltech, then they could have gotten all of the qtopia apps available, and would have a well known sdk to back them up.
Also since iphone appears to be running a linux type system and is using gcc tool-chain it would be realitly speaking easy to implement qtopia on it.

Another big issue is iphone is not in asia. Most westerners have the silly notion asia is poor.
Singapore has a higher average wage then USA.
In PH even, a call-center person may make only $500-$1K a month but he has a much higher disposable income then most americans.
Ussually he is young, lives with his parents etc (most children live with parents till married). So he can easily afford a $400 gadget.
Also asians are kind of "shy". So there is the social aspect. SMS is non-confrontational.
Most importantly u can not ask a girl out on a date Smiley (if she is a proper girl). So young people will post thier names on various places (even some radio stations offer this service), there are even publications that just have this, looking for a text mate. The perspective couple will then text for many months before they may actually meet in person (if they do).

Even in PH, when i first arrived cell-phones where much more advanced then anything Canada offered.
One of the major reasons is no cell phone here is locked, so switching providers is as simple as switching the sim card.
Also asian's are much more adaptable to new tech, so SMS in asia was very popular even before it became known in america.
Also in PH, the cell phone is used as a portable office etc, a photo album etc.

So IMHO iphone is making a mistake ignoring the asian market, and by the time they get there nokia etc, will be very hard to displace.

nop your 100% correct that the US is behind the times. But, the iPhone is what we have. Sure in japan you buy a soda from a machine with your phone. But here in the US you are lucky if you have signal at your house...

what the iPhone did, and will do with API release, is show people that you dont have to be a technoweeny to have a smart phone. prior to the iPhone, a smart phone was what some asshole in a suit was jabbing away at, and it was called a blackberry. Then the sidekick came along, and retarded 13 year old girls rejoiced for a heavy POS that made them look like a man. the iPhone is fairly gender neutral, and simple to use. very non-threatening, unlike most smartphones. My mom and dad both picked it up and just started playing with it, saying "cool" every once in a while. Thats the difference. The API unfortunately is going to complicate things a bit, since inevitably people will so over customize their phones that tech support (ie sons and daughters) wont be able to help anymore. But i'll take that hit Wink

I should stop wasting time on forums and work Smiley
nop your 100% correct that the US is behind the times.
I am not saying the iphone is a bad product i am questioning apples strategy.
From my understanding the iphone is a direct compeditor to XDA / treo
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Also they run at like $400US.
Treos and XDA run at like $600+ US (depending on model).
From the specs, iphone has a bigger screen, more memory etc.
Also it has a 2M camera which very important for asia (need to send pics to other family members  ROFLMAO)
If iphones where available here, i would go purchase one right now Smiley, i paid a lot more for my xda (O2).

Fuking blackberry Smiley. My mother in law has one, (I do not even think u can buy one here anymore), people laff at here and tell her to get with the times Smiley.

In asia people love gadgets. Department stores are filled full of "labour saving devices" with demonstrators. That waffle iron, coffee maker, toaster would be a big hit here. Ironically these items are purchased, taken home and never used. The maid takes one look at the contraption and has no idea how to use it Smiley and then just sticks it in the cupboard with all the other contraptions that are never used Smiley

99.99% of PH has cell phone coverage.
PH is a lot smaller then USA and also has a much higher population density, so as a result cell companies can recover costs of cell towers a lot quicker.
Also due to lack of regulation there are 4 major cell providers in PH.
Due to stiff competition each cell provider has to try and offer better features, price etc.

As a result life in PH has drastically changed because of the cell phone.
It is very common for one family member to work in manila and send $$$ back to the provinces to support the rest of the family.
The cell companies offer unlimited SMS for like 10-15 PHP a day ($0.50) well within anyones budget, as a result family member can now talk to his family, send pictures etc.
Also you can buy low-end cellphones (some sort of chinese lookalike with a name like KNOCKIA  ROFLMAO) for as little as 1500 PHP ($30) this is because of lack of regulation etc, no need for FDA approval here.
These type of phones are very popular with maids etc, as a result they do nothing all day and SMS with their boyfriend etc Wink
As cellphone ussuage increases, this has the effect of lower price etc.
The sending $$$ with cellphone here is an important feature. The working member of the family has to send $$$ back to the province. It is very easy and safe to do with cellphone.

A prime example of apple's success in PH is ipod ussuage. Most every family has someone working in middle east, singapore, hong kong, america etc. I have no idea why but when they come back for visit (every year) they will bring home like 2-3 ipods, nokia phones etc. That is how u can have a guy in middle of a slum with a fuking ipod. With typical pinoy ingenuity a cottage industry has developed. Go to the mall/market etc. You can rent a puter for like 20 PHP per hour, it is full of MP3s and u can load ur ipod Smiley

So my point is apple should be in asia in the markets with nokia, sony erickson, samsung etc.
(tried to find a good pic of a PH market, but none of the ones on the net really show the hussle and bustle, how crowded it is, and how big they are. They sell everything from food, clothes, and in midst of it a stall selling cellphones Smiley)

There are 2 services i know of
http://www.g-cash.com.ph/ which is offered by globe
somehow using the same system using ur cellphone u can access ur bank account and reload ur phone also.

And smart
http://smart.com.ph/money/
smart seems to be more popular since u can send money from overseas
it also is kinda like a western union, you can go into one of thier stores and tell them to send $$$ to another store, where the guy comes in and picks it up (he has to provide valid ID etc)
This is very important since in the remote areas they do not have a bank etc (but they have a cell phone offer  ROFLMAO)

with over $8-12 billion (no one is really sure how much but a large ammount) being sent back by OFW, and the providers get anywhere from 2-5% of ammount transmitted .....
