this allows you to share your iPhone's connection with your computer.
In other words, you can get a different address from AT&T and then use your notebook to talk to ... erm ... sites you might be interested in.

I've just been making ad-hoc networks with my linux laptops and then SSH tunneling through my iphone.

Unless they are doing it that way, it's insecure. No more insecure than connecting naked to a public wifi hotspot though, and people do that all the time.
