I got into php via ajax with scriptaculous, prototype.js, (pretty odd I know but I am new to this world), anyway in my quest for something really crossplatform i recently came across __spry__ [http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/].
It is a seriously kick ass option compared to the others because it covers nearly all the needs and its extendable, and extremly well documentented unlike the rest, last but not least it very modular whereby with the apparently trendy mosaical approach, it really "load as you use" and very light. The question is, is adobe really a footprint? anyone?
