Personally I'm a big fan of the Dojo JS framework - some great event based methods in there, worth checking out.

Funny thing is that I learned jQuery before I learned actual javascript Of course not knowing javascript made some concepts & restrictions little bit hard to understand with jQuery but that was $('#cock').bind(function(){$('#asshole').hide();}) times...
