I avoid tools, memorize it first but later backup to a grain of rice.
Then I use this:
http://www.perkiset.org/forum/php/perks_xml_handler_class-t861.0.html
... because writing big stuff is just too hard by hand, so I do it all programmatically.

Yeah. Generally, I just use a naked hard-disk platter and a paperclip with a strong magnet duct-taped around the other end.
That's my IDE of choice for everything.

Personally just build DOM objects in PHP and generate XML that way.

care to elaborate/example?
Sure. Details can be found at
http://uk2.php.net/manual/en/intro.dom.php
- takes a little while to get used to the method but generally speaking its fairly easy.
Code:
$xml = new DOMDocument();
// Create Element
$testNode = $xml->createElement('TestNode');
// Add Attribute
$testNode->setAttribute('TestAttrib', 'myValue');
// Create an Element another way
$anotherNode = new DOMElement('AnotherNode');
// Appeand 'AnotherNode' as a child of 'TestNode'
$testNode->appendChild($anotherNode);
// Append 'TestNode' to document
$xml->appendChild($testNode);
// Display the XML
echo $xml->save();
Bit of a contrived example obviously, but thats the general idea.
