All of my sites that deploy video have been using Flash video format (FLA) for the last few years... but it looks as though the tide is turning against Flash and H.264 is taking widespread hold... particularly because of YouTube's ubiquity.

So - I've not done much research, but haven't found what I'm looking for - is there a standard player deployment mechanism for H.264? Do I need a specialized streamer, or is it pseudo-streaming like FLA? Are there options for the kind of player I can deploy?

Enquiring minds want to know...

you already use the program that encodes to 264... handbrake. though thats for DVDs.

flash plays 264 now actually, and if you look at pretty much every video site out there, its flash. including..... YouTube. doi!
Though i am not sure if that video from youtube is 264 or flv. i think its 264?

Premiere and aftereffect have it built in.

and i am pretty sure CS3 flash video encoder has had an update that now enables that codec as well. I am going to run the updater and see if it does.

Actually my goal is to abandon Flash - for example, we scoff, convert and play movie trailers for [my cinema supper club client] - but since I've used a Flash player that I munged up, it will not work on the iPhone, which is a forthcoming goal, I can feel it. So I'm wondering how to embed an iPhone playable vid and provide an embedded player on a site without using flash...

(sorry if that's a stupid question, I get the feeling that I'm missing something important here that you've said)

I actually was looking for a way to deliver video clips, straight to the iphone, streaming realtime. I found that site as a result, since obviously porn would be the first market to figure it out... lol

there are some other interesting tidbits of iphone specific code in there as well.

I however do not think you embed video into a page. I think it needs to be full screen, or nothing.

h.264 is supported by ffmpeg under Linux and VLC if you want to multicast (which you haven't said you do).

Most of the newer high end (read commercial) IP cams are using this codec for their MPEG-4 streaming.

"Apparently" this is what Google uses. I've played with VLC a lot recently, along with live555, Zoneminder, ffmpeg, SDL, etc. VLC know their shit.

i have been able to install vlc on win98 thru vista, all flavas of *nix including
os-x and remains as the easiest, most diverse 'no frills' player regardless
of platform... plays everything no quams i cant stand winamp anymore and dont make me and my slow
ass computer puke by suggesting itunes  windows media player and itunes are in the same 'computer hogging' boat as far as im concerned
