Not really surprised that this has happened.

Before now, people have had their asses fired for too much facebooking, using office time for personal things. etc.. etc...
It is just a natural progression that an employer would take it as far as calling it 'hacking'.
As by the very definition, they are using the resources beyond the original intent and for things 'against company guidelines'.
Might I add of which, most if not all staff were probably made to sign an agreement upon employment.

Therefore, 'unauthorized access' = 'hacking'.

It is sad that this had to happen, but it is also sad that in the current business climate, there are millions of people abusing the trust their employers give them, and spend their days doing 'sweet fuck all' at work.

IMHO, a job is a job, you are there to do that job. So do your fucking job and when you are done GTFO.

If it were meant to be pleasant, you wouldnt be getting paid for it.

The guy deserved to be fired outright for inappropriate use of company assets... but convicted of a felony? That is just wrong, flat wrong.
