OK, I understand that having a patent is a way of protecting what you invent. And I am in support of the creators of original art to be able to profit from such art for a reasonable amount of time. But this is just silly, a waste of time and your's and my tax dollar.

"US Ethernet Innovations" has secured a lot of patents over time and managed to get a hold of one that talks about optimizing the connection between a host when you first connect an ethernet cable. They claim that Acer, Apple, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, Hewlett Packard, Sony and Toshiba (all named concurrently as co-defendents in the suit) are all in violation and they demand that they be compensated ... since these infractions have been occurring since the early '90s.

The early NINETIES? So: a company that created this innovation (such as it is) didn't go after whomever first violated the patent. US Ethernet Bullshit scoops up the patent and squats until such time that lots and lots of people have violated it, so they have a huge case on their hands. Note that all the companies specified are public and have huge market caps.

Frickin' disgusting. IMO, Tort reform for the patent industry should contain a certain Common Sense clause.  Angry

Oh yes, fair to say that you're on the far left side of that argument Smiley

And I'm OK with that.

Hhh, blow me. We have a "No Dickheads from Finland" law here in the US. You'd be arrested and deported to Gitmo before you spent dollar 1 on the exchange. You've already got too many hot women and live closer to so many other great countries than us that you cannot be allowed to have anything else.

Yeah, from Russia with love Cheesy You forgot our great taxes... earn over 1 million euros per year as income and you pay over 50% in taxes Praise Well nobody who earns over 1 million euros per year takes it out as basic income but it shows our lovely taxes. Average worker pays about 28-42% in taxes and don't forget cars that cost A LOT.. new BMW 300 series costs about 45000 euros and so on Jackoff Though I would never want BMW, I'm more of a muscle car man. Oh by the way, new Mustang (2008-2009) costs about 50000 euros too compared to your $20000 ... I love Finland.

Before Reagan, our top tax bracket was 92%, however few ever paid any such thing. It then dropped to 62% and then finally to 39%, where it was until Bush dumped it to 36%. Funny story - Obama wants the top bracket to be back at 39%, but that's considered Socialist now. I had no idea my country was on such a slippery slope  Roll Eyes

Anyhoo, BMW is about the same here - for a Mustang you're paying a lot of import. Also, since you have a public heath care option, that takes away a huge amount of what the average American pays every month (I pay almost $2K/month now) - so your net earnings are better. My health insurance payments alone are almost the equivalent of the average family income in Arizona. If you include my deductible and copays, I'm there.

People get really confused about taxes. There seems to be some issue that if the government takes $1 it's worse than a private scumbag industry taking $10 from me. Really weird. But I digress.

The chicks man! The chicks! That's why you live there!

Heh, no more chicks for me.. I'm taken man Cheesy And you know what they say.. grass is always greener on the other side.. I'm so weak for italian ladies like Monica Bellucci Jackoff

Yeah, taxes and whole expenses of living are mixed up by many people. But US used to be The place for incorporating but now Panama is taking over. We have a lot of perks (get it? ) here but in my opinion the worst part in Finland is the "take it up to the ass and smile" culture. Finnish people take the beating and don't even complain. People here take everything government decides without any riots or anything worse than some forum writing. To me that's unforgivable sheepish. I wasn't born to take endless stupid decisions politicians make because of their own agenda. Thank god for globalization & internet.

I actually support system where everybody gets what they pay for. Unless you are seriously ill, I have no sympathy for your unemployment. It's actually quite rare you can't get ANY job. If you don't like the jobs that are available or they don't satisfy your standards, fuck off somewhere else to cry, you just made a choice to turn down a job. If you can't afford health care, it's your job to educate yourself and go up the ladder and earn more. I don't believe for a second that people can't survive in modern world. It's just because people have pride and they can blame economy. But it's not an excuse to be a loser that cries to the government for money.

But I have to say that I support free health care like we have here in Finland. But then we have some other taxes that are completely ridiculous. For example now our government is planning this new fee called Mediabill. Now we have this mandatory TV payment that you have to pay if you own TV. Of course many finns like me don't own TV and we don't pay the fee Cheesy So now they want to take this TV fee away and replace that with Mediabill. It's about 170 euros per year and everybody in Finland has to pay it, no exceptions. That means that even people in Lapland who live in areas that don't have TV reception has to pay it. All the students have to pay it even if they don't have the money for TV, for real. It's funny that it's completely against everything what modern democratic society should stand for but still our government is pushing it to action. Right now they will start to collect it 2012. What makes it really funny is that Mediabill will support only our "national tv channels" which are in control by institute called YLE and YLE actually has TWICE as many employees as whole BBC. 6 million people country has twice as big national TV company as UK and they produce 5 channels. 2 of those channels are actually watched if you check ratings and only by the old people. We have three other major channels which are all financed with advertisements. Last time I heard 59% of finnish people are against this Mediabill but still our government keeps pushing it thru the ladder to get it in action.

Welcome to "democracy" Cheesy

Patents are fine.
Trolls suck.

Its causing major problems with innovation.

There are countless examples now of the inventor, getting sued by a troll who took the idea/product/feature and patented it. A few of the big companies are doing it, but in a defensive manner from what I understand. So, i wouldn't say trolling, but instead defending. Like MS patenting the double click (or whatever it was they recently did). The created a license of free use for it.

But the guys who look for ideas that have been in existance for years, but yet are patenting them now, even though they have nothing to do with it... They should be shot.

Isn't there a law that says that if the invention has been in public use for over 1 year it can't be patented?

there is, but... someone has to file to make it public, its not automatic if i understand right.
plus, these guys spend an enormous amount of time trying to figure out how to patent an existing thing, even if they shouldnt be able to.

Also, you can go purchase companies that might have patented something but never pursued violations and then go sue for it. Much like what it looks like USEI is doing here.

I have no problem with defensive patenting ... again, original art. Particularly if you don't use it as a lever but moreso a way of protecting yourself from predators.

All that said, welcome to the world above the radar Apple. You've now got deep enough pockets to be on everyone's list.

Patents are fine.

I'm not completely with you on that one: http://www.organicconsumers.org/patent/genepatents.cfm

Patents encourage innovation Roll Eyes  Horse crap on a stick will get you there faster.  Patents have hardly any real value beyond securing future revenue for those who know the game well enough to play IMO.

This is downright creepy:
Quote
Applications in the last month alone sought patents for another 34,000
segments of the human genetic code, says Sue Mayer of GeneWatch UK,
the group that carried out the research for the UK's Guardian newspaper.

"What's striking is the speed and scale at which patent applications are being
made," she told the paper. "Unless the rules are changed, in a few years'
time we will find very basic knowledge and information has been privatised."

Patents on 161,195 human genes or gene sequences have now been filed.
These genes cover virtually every tissue in the body, for example lung
tissue and a light-sensitive pigment in the eye.

Talk about "privacy concerns" Shocked

Anyhoo, BMW is about the same here

SO false.

A 3 series is around 30 grand. He said 45k euro, which is more like 60 grand...so unless you consider double to be "about the same", then no.

EDIT: I noticed this too when I asked D88 what their BMW SUVs cost, and it was the equivalent of around a hundred and twenty thousand dollars (as compared to like 45k-50k in the states). Note this was 2008.

Correct at those rates ... I was looking at one just the other day that was $85K sticker and just went there.

Kurdt - what's a baseline 300 go for? Love to have Apples to Apples on this one ... but I'm wondering if the import duty will damage prices regardless of import country...
