Because he is? To quote one of my favorite movies: "the greatest thing devil ever did was to convince the world the pope is one to listen" - why else would he issue statements that are so clearly against anything that could be even remotely considered good for humanity?

Pope does not suggest that which is good for humanity, but instead that which is good for the catholic church. The two, often, do not go hand in hand.
