Oh, that could save me the nearly $1000 I'm sure I'm gonna end up spending on a 3G iPad.

You're going 3G Dave? I'd not have thought it.
Well, yeah... it seems like if I'm gonna buy the thing, it might as well work everywhere. And since I can't (and may never be able to) use my iPhone for tethering, there are still plenty of places with no WiFi, or WiFi you have to pay a fortune for (like most medium- to high-end hotel rooms, airports, etc.) and plenty of other places one might want to use the 'pad.
I probably wouldn't keep the 3G activated all the time, but it is reasonably priced to turn it on before traveling or whatever - and depending on how I end up using the iPad, I'll decide whether it makes sense to keep the 3G activated all the time or not.
You've got the MyFi thingees, which means you've always got a hotspot. But I can't really justify the monthly cost for one of those, nor do I always want to haul it around with me.
The fact that using 3G only "costs" about 10% extra in battery life on the iPad is also swinging things in that direction.
