How important is it to have a ping script cron job for your websites?

I stopped pinging for my websites a long time ago, having not seen any real benefit anymore.

I'd wager that there are others here with very different experience.

Interesting - Eli from Bluehatseo is ping crazy! He's always mentioning it..

Anyway, I've done it quite a bit, but never took the time to compare, say, the indexing time of a brand new domain that I only pinged, vs one that I got backlinks to.
