For the dog "hiding" i should have probably elaborated a little more.
I am not saying I am an expert, just the observations I have made from observing dogs.
When training a dog there are basically 2 problems.
1) The dog does not know what he is supposed to do.
2) The dog knows what he is supposed to do, but he does a mental accounting. I am not supposed to eat the garbage, but if i grab the garbage, then run really fast, hide under the house maybe i can get away with it. If this situtation is not corrected, then the animal will thing every time i do something bad i can go hide under the house. (With some dogs
This was situation number 2.
Dogs and people are very similar when it comes to social behaviour. Both are pack animals, both attempt to conform to the leader. And i find studying both human's and dog behaviour very intresting. Basically it is simple pavlov, and it works just as well for humans as it does for dogs. (Stalin was a very big fan of pavlov). And there are 2 types of stimuli, postive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Most of the time it is best to use postitive reinforcement. In extreme cases you have to use negative reinforcement. As i said, with choking (i will not argue the humane issues here etc) i have never had to do it more the 5 times in most dogs lifespan. It is only reserved for when the dog knows he is not supposed to do a certain activity.
Winning the dogs respect. Or what ever u want to call it (it all really ammounts to the same thing). Like humans dogs are pack animals. In a pack there is 1 leader. Basically you have become the pack leader.
What happens if you are not pack leader. Well u get my brother in law situation, where the dog pisses on all his belongings. It is no accident that the dog pisses on his bed, pisses on his big screen TV and all his other prized possesion. Basically the dog is saying i own all these things. And indirectly the dog is saying i own a really nice human.
Depending on how sensitive the dog is. Sometimes you do not have to say a word to the dog, just give it a bad look it will then sulk and cry in the corner. After a few minutes of that, you tell the dog its ok and she will be happy again. This is because dogs naturally wish to please the pack leader.
You can have lots of fun with dogs. Most of the time dog can not understand what u are saying. It is like Blah Blah Blah "sit" Blah Blah Blah. He just goes by tone of voice.
So u can say stuff to the dog. You stupid dog, You better listen to me, Of i will cut you head off and give you to the locals to make into tastey treats. I am going to kill u. Providing you are patting the dog etc, saying it in a kind soft voice, the dog will be happy.
On the other hand u can yell at the dog in a mean voice "I love you" and have the dog scared.
Plastic tooth collar thingie, i have no idea

I am old skool

Again it depends on the situation and where u live. If i was in america where there is liability stupid law suits and crap like that i probably would not own a dog. Under PH law anything that happens in ur property is self defense. I keep my dogs for protection. It would be quite simple to train them not to kill things that enter the yard, and if i was in america i would do it (i would be irresponsible not to). Again situation differs where i am located, less then 15km away in the mountains is an insurgent strong hold. The gov't is able to control areas close to highways etc where the military can move. Approx 2 weeks ago the insurgents blew up 6 cell phone towers (cell phone company was not paying revolutionary tax). Again these insurgents officially do not exist. Could a determined squad of insurgents wipe me out, yes easily. But they are not stupid the hassle of the dogs means they risk too much for too little gain. Unless i cause an incident where they are forced to act they will leave me alone.
