Once I got there I agree... it was just that after so many years of Windoz the scared factor and not wanting to endure yet another change (I do it, but I never said I liked it ) was just more than I wanted to do. But it was the best move I've made in a long, long time.

Got a new monster box and didn't touch it for almost a month ( you know the *pain* of installing all shit needed, dev tools, third party dlls, databases etc, finding software keys etc). Finally took the time and it was a lot more pain than I ever could dream of: It came with Vista preinstalled so I thought why not give it a try. Result: the Novell VPN client didn't work - which is a requirement for accessing one of my clients. Solution I thought: VMWare and run XP inside. Now VPN did work but no matter what I did I couldn't share files between the virtual box and the host. Also the box was SOO slow overall. I gave it a real try and spent over a day, then just went back to installing XP. However now since my hardware was so new XP didn't recognize it, not even the netword card (no Internet), so searching my office like crazy for a UPC network card, plug it in, search the net for appropriate drivers, installing etc etc. I just HATE those kind of things - it's so non productive.
As for Win/Linux - I have Ubuntu in a virtual box and my hope is to make a switch. However as long as my clients are using XP I need it...

vmware. hmm ive had no problems, except running the macOSX image. Strange.
I have a ciscoVPN requirement, and had to hunt around for an updated version of the client, since they try to hide it. Found it at an EDU and downloaded it. I assume you could do similar for novell.
I actually am no running vista again, and i do like some things. the file system is better organized, and the file manager is MUCH better than XP. kind of a cross between XP,Mac, and something new. But as for everything else, meh, whatever. it suffers bit rot just like XP did for me.

Ugh. If you want to go Linux (or Mac, that'd be my suggestion ) then you could do what I do Stefan - I run Parallels desktop so that when I need to be a Windows box I am - but other than that, I have a gorgeous and wonderfully capable OS that doesn't pee the bed whenever I want to do something new. Now in fairness, you could run Windows with Parallel installations of other Windows, but what it sounds like is that you'd like your personal machine to just work - and you sometimes need to be like your client. Parallels works perfectly for me in that very instance, where many of my clients are a variety of Windows versions. Including one that has a legacy system requiring W95!!! My notebook connects to the world better than any Windows box I've ever owned, yet when I need to be Windows I am. Delightful. OK, and now the inevitable "Fanboi" comments will abound. Bring it on...

Parallels desktop was total news for me. Will add a note on that - however I will keep my current setup for as long as the box lives. Don't wanna spend another minute on setups At least I have finally left Office for good and running OpenOffice instead. As for my programming I am 100 times better at C#/ASP.NET than PHP or anything else so I will stay on that field for a while longer. Cause right now for me it's about creating LOTS of shit nice websites...I will however try to get rid of IIS and use Apache and mod_aspdotnet, downloaded it but never yet tried it.

I didn't find moving to linux hard at all, but then I started using linux when I was about 13 or so...stopped for a while when I discovered a teenage social life, picked back up on computers right before college....Anyway I've always been a big Gentoo and Slackware fan, but my dev box at home runs Ubuntu. Latest version is awesome. If you have an ATI card, Compiz Fusion is the default desktop. Blows. Any. Other. Away. Seriously. If you have an nvidia card or some others, you just have to click a checkbox to enable it. Having an OpenGL hardware accelerated desktop is the fuckin' balls.
i'm running the latest ubuntu now and i agree about the compiz desktop. really nice. just eye candy but some of the plugins are useful. stable too, not like the last time i tried it. im using virtualbox for my windows needs and it's really smooth. it has an integrated mode like parallels but i haven't tried it yet. mac is looking more and more like just another windows to me. also the jellybean/brushed metal look is fugly.

Thanks for the tip arms. I'm wrestling with some screen resolution issues with vmware at the moment so I might give virtualbox a go (XP guest under FC7 host). I have a Dell widescreen monitor that runs a weird resolution (1440x900?) that vmware's SVGA driver is not amused with. Cheers, td

i have the same resolution.
in virtualbox on the first run after installing the xp guest it was about 640 or something. i went to the windows display setting and raised the color settings to the highest. it got buggy and i shutdown the guest machine and started it again and i was able to get fullscreen. i don't know if it was because i changed the settings or because i just needed to reboot windows.
i used vmplayer before to load a partion as an image and it was really slow. im guessing it was because it was a physical partition rather than a fresh image.

np. i agree it's pretty sweet. it amazes me how xp boots faster as an image than a real install. i might even give osx a go.

A grandson just got a brandy new HP laptop the other day. All the bells and whistles for a pretty nice price at Staples. So he brings it over last weekend, (to leech my bw lol). I ask him how he likes it. "This windows vista crap is ...well it's crap. Will you delete it and put a copy of Winxp on it?" You have to admire M$ for trying anything they can to fight off the competition, but they screwed themselves with the Vista. I don't like windows much. I've been using some sort of (w) - amp setup for quite a while. Got hooked up on ubuntu and at Perk's reco, got parallels going. Now if I could wean some of my other users off of windoze, I'd go linux or Mac full time.

What do your users do? If it's email, word processing, web surfing, then linux will work fine for them. Set it up for them and they never need to touch a thing again. If it's gaming, they're probably stuck with doze.

Right as always, VS. Resistance to change is a powerful dis-incentive.

i must be really hard headed. I am still using it. even though when work on remote files, it freezes and saves half the file, breaking everything. My internets are weak as well when using vista it seems.
i paid for the damn thing, i wanna use it.
