I've had difficulty at times, if I mess with my hosts file where the host address does not immediately change.

Quick fix: Goto System Prefs | Network, and change your primary DNS address - it doesn't matter what to - change the last octet by one digit, click "Apply" then change it back and "Apply." This forces the internal name cache to be flushed and you're good to go.
