Um, I'm no Java expert, but isn't net beans a methodology, not an IDE?

For Linux... you mean for PHP or something?
Eclipse is probably your best bet if you require such a thing. I use BBEdit for my Mac, but it's a text editor++, not an IDE. Gave IDEs up a long time ago. I'm also a big VI guy. Not much need for anything else. IDEs confuse me.

do you mean a WYSIWYG editor like dreamweaver? i has a good designer mode for java swing apps but i don't know about php. i know it has a toolbox of snippets for html but i don't think it has an html designer like dreamweaver. if your just looking for an ide make sure the netbeans you download is the right one. they have a php bundle that doesn't have all the java stuff. if you want to try eclipse i recommend you just use aptana - again make you sure you download the right bundle. --edit here is a WYSIWYG editor: http://kompozer.net/sudo aptitude install kompozer

geany does php code completion and isnt as heavy as eclipse or netbeans... i think both eclipse and netbeans attempt to do php code exploration but not very successfully. The best php solution IMO would be to run a windows virtual and use phpdesigner2008. Has 'step through' feature that actually works and will work on a remote server.
netbeans and eclipse have 'step through' but they are so bogged down and complex its hardly worth the advantage the ide functionality brings.
phpdesigner2008 has code exploration, completion, breakpoints and is a very lightweight application.

Don't use a WYSIWYG editor like Dreamweaver.
It will turn you into a useless tech-retard.

WYSIWYG editors often generate ugly, bloated, even error ridden code. learn html and css.
