Similar format for everything nowadays. Just like a Java app - it's a compressed bunch of files. Some of them contain the XML that lays out the schema, some of them contain the binary data, etc.

yeah, you can read it 'straight-up' with ultraedit. I was forced into handling them a little over a year ago when I hired some freelance writers from the print world.
