How can you gain mindshare and foothold on the world's most prevalent browser?

Inject yourself right into it. This is clever and strategically really dangerous for M$ IMO...

ah google wave is why they did it.

Must mean they are getting ready to release it. I am interested to see how that web app plays out.

I agree, this makes MS look tarded in some respects. But then again, HTML5 hasn't even been finalized. This behavior of embracing tech before it becomes an approved standard is getting a bit silly, and is going to bit a major company in the ass at some point. Like wifi 802n, which had dozens of adapters out, almost 2 years before it was approved.

But on OTOH, if you can get (your engine) into IE and you're more nimble, then you could jump, juke and jive around as the spec changes. And at the end of the day, people will know that it was YOU that did all the coolness in the browser, not IE. Consider: If Google can insert itself inside of IE and then it works better faster cooler, then why not use a Google operating system? Why not use google apps? I think this play is all about using IE to expand the name/capabilities of Google itself.

I think this spells a lot of long term trouble for M$ in general. The more I think of it, the more I'd be creeped if I was them.

ROFLMAO 2 years ago, PinkHat and I gave her mom an iMac. It's Christmas, she opens the box. "You gave me the Internet!!!!" It is to smile.

You could be right, but there are lots of tweeners... and really, no matter how many converts they get in this way, if they get mindshare and talked about they are winning. Honestly I think it's a damn clever move.

It all depends on how many developers will use HTML 5 etc.
WTF is xhtml 1.1 Smiley WTF are all the XUL apps Smiley
How many developers use XUL.
Unless u make a FF extension no need.
Developers are funny Smiley
Prime example is languages.
C is a POS. Pascal can do the same shit tons better but for what ever reason never got market share.
PHP is a POS, but same thinking.
Python is less of a POS but same story Smiley

examples of XUL apps (There was an XUL plugin that allowed u to run xul in IE).
Also XUL "widgets" are native widgets
http://www.google.com/mozilla/google.xul google page in XUL
http://grumdrig.com/u6map/u6map.xul some sort of map viewer for a game.
etc.

Biggest reason why FF has largest market share is the extensions.
Webkit /  Chrome the way its API is setup you can not make same extensions as u have for FF.
Only other browser where it might be possible is opera.

my dad still thinks gmail is an application on his computer and google is his internet.
he wont give a shit who made it work, it will be windows from his POV.

It's interesting to see if people start using Wave. Some people say it's going to kill email and IM but I'm not gonna use it because Google's privacy raping. For some reason I'm not very keen to share every conversation I have with a company that's known to analyze private info for advertising purposes like for example Gmail. It's not gonna take long after your Wave apps are going to have dynamic ads reading what you do. I also wonder how long it's going to take that people start protesting this huge advertisement injection Google is doing. If history is any indicator, never.
