the short version is this. 2 reasons as far as I understand it.
1) Because they are content collectors that display content from uncontrolled sources, they are concerned about liability. Like piratebay, which is obvious, they could be nailed for providing links to piracy content. This would mean they either need to add a review process for content which is too costly and impossible in some cases, or they need a war chest for getting fined.
2) the main reason is the tracking requirements. Although it keeps changing, the requirements that they log all visitor info and behavior, is pretty much impossible. This also means that google, who maintains that they don't collect personal data, would now have to. It's a hollow argument that people would go to other engines, since they would all have to adhere to the same rules, but, it does mean they would need to add the costly infrastructure to keep that data. And that now exposes them to security and privacy violations. For example, what if Anonymous gets a hold of that data? Oh looky, the CEO of HP watches midget porn! bam, lawsuit.

Here's an article about why Wikipedia is going dark tomorrow in protest. It describes some of these things that Nuts talks about as well.

Yes, we are both US.

I'd have to say that there's grass roots hatred of it, but it's backed by some REALLY big money. That's why the network is so alive about it - there is a lot of momentum to pass it/them. The blackout sites like Wiki are vehemently opposed to it because, much like the "Patriot Act" the name is a misdirection. It will actually give large corporations and IP holders the ability to do really shitty things, rather than "take care of the little guy."

I considered blacking out the Cache for the day but our traffic is not that high Smiley Thought it'd be better to talk about it than follow the blackout folk.

One of the best short overview articles was put up by Wired
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/01/why-weve-censored-wired-com/

Reddit.com seems to have started the protest idea which is producing some tangible results.

A Huge Crowd Just Mobbed The New York Senators' Offices To Protest SOPA

I'm not optimistic that Congress will really change --in fact, I have concerns that it will seek revenge-- but today it was taught that the internet is more than a series of tubes.

>More Conservative

The liberal/Dems have been strongly behind SOPA/PIPA and seem to be be slower to bail  ...which is why I suspect the Repubs are executing a tactical withdrawal.

Ahhhmm, "Duh."

I think we'll see more soon, and then it'll be "I was out first. No I was. No I was." And some will claim that it's an example of bipartisanship  Roll Eyes

I do no think the the Megaupload raid was retribution, as it was done via "old school" legal methods which require some time to get in order.  That said, I expect the shutdown procedure may have been nearly ready and it was moved forward a day or two just as a show of force.

BUT it is precisely because cases like this require TIME and (some) due process that they are proposing SOPA/PITA ...they want to fast-track this process.

"First, the shutdown inadvertently proved that the U.S. government already has all the power it needs to take down its copyright villains, even those that aren't based in the United States. No SOPA or PIPA required."

Worth a read. My thoughts exactly. Anonymous screwed the pooch this time.
