Yeah, I've read so many threads about people frustrated with the fragmentation and that it's really hard to make solid flow because of the different interfaces ... and it's juust going to get worse with Gingerbread and the new "optimized for tablet" version next year. I think it'll stay afloat and perhaps even (relatively) thrive, but I don't think anyone in the space is going to succeed singularly like Apple.

3-5 buttons is the problem.
Go push the search button on the bottom one....
That means no app can rely on button position, like game controls for example. Therefore, why have buttons at all?
Instructions: press search button to fire. User: uh....

So I'm like one of the most hardcore gamers I know, and there are zero games on my phone. Why is it that I can't understand why people would want to play games on their phones? I use my phone to respond to text messages and read forums about the games I play, not play games.

obviously that was just an example. I actually do play games, some well suited for ipad/phone, but not so much for KB and Mouse.
But aside from games, there are plenty of situations i can think of where software could rely on a button that may not be there. and if they instead design the software with that in mind, which is that a button might not exist, then why have buttons at all?

Oh I'm with you there. 1-2 buttons you can hold down to hard reboot if things go horribly awry, maybe a volume button/slider, but I can't see much need for anything physical beyond that. An expansion port would be nice, so I don't have to pay $100 for 16GB (I'm lookin' at you Apple)

yep. minimum is power, volume, home.
technically volume is not needed, but its convenient. But without volume you need a vibrate/mute switch. on phones, not iPADs <middle finger @ apple>

As the story goes, Steveo fought hard to have no physical buttons at all on the phone. Not even a hard reboot, which is galactically optimistic, but foolish as well IMO. Or perhaps, he just fought that one so hard so as to push the designers away from real buttons ... always knew he'd concede and such.
To Nuts' point, the problem is not really that the buttons are different from a user perspective, because every phone owner will get used to their phone's layout and functionality. It's about the difficulties that developers have making use of feature buttons that are inconsistent. There are lots of threads out there about how massively fragmented that platform is becoming, and that's a really bad thing for its future.
I don't think that Google would have to go all iWalledGarden to make it simply more consistent: a power/reboot and home button, optional volume. Period. Then the development community would have an easier time with the features. Or not: buttons are simply one instance of just how different each phone is. The problems are much more broad, I believe.

All the buttons on the above screen are the same, just different icons All apps I have DLed for my HTC desire work fine
Problem might be low end android phones where there is not enuff HW requirements etc. It is probably less fragmented then windoze CE is etc.
