I have an interesting conundrum.

I have a bunch of servers that take care of a lot of big heavy machinery. I need to demonstrate what the real world impact of a 10M pipe between the servers and the equipment is, taking into account some additional network latency and such. I'm thinking a sustained 5M would show us what we want to see.

Obviously, I could simply insert a 10M switch in between the entities, but this will still be too robust. I was thinking 2 10M switches with a damper of some kind in the middle, emulating the cloud. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be the best "speed soak" for me to use here?

TIA,

hmmmm, yes, might do ... I have a couple here, don't know if they're capable, but definitely worth a look. I was not thinking here because I kept having "router" in my mind and I don't have the opportunity (for this test) to modify anything about the TCP stack on the two sets of machines ... but yes, a managed switch might be able to do it - provided this is a capability of managed switches LOL ... is it? Do you know? I'm ignorant here.

Almost all modern "managed" switches allow per-port throttling/capping, Time of day limits, QOS, among other things. You should be able to pick a cheap one up at frys for $50-80. The problem is, most switches are unmanaged at the low end price.

Not entirely sure I get what your doing though.

Large medical equipment. Linear accelerators, radiation containment, CT etc.

Perhaps we could have a call later today Nuts ... I could use some brainstorming I believe. Big BIG stuff to do and a frightening time frame to do it within.
