you can do it with bittorrent and set it all up to be private. bittorrent won't be any slower than anything else, you just wont get the benefit of multiple seeders/peers. you could also write a script to create torrent files from all the files to be shared. all that might be a little work though. what about direct connect? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Connect_(file_sharing) you can set up a private hub only open to those with a password.

Very interesting Arms... I'm liking the looks of Open DC Hub and Verlihub... and experience with either?
I'm impressed at the Verlihub manual and structure, thus far it looks the strongest of what you have suggested.

Though it could benefit if everyone had the app open and sharing the whole library. couldn't you also use iTunes? I know I can mount a remote directory as a drive, and then connect to it in iTunes. That directory requires a user/pass... or at least i think i can.

What you'd require to have open so that you could share muzak on the public tubes would creep me out. Gonna have to be a bit more clever than that I'm thinking. Additionally, we then put Apple in control of our security designs (ala DRM et al) which would not exactly fit with my current notion

Does anyone have any experience with private shared networks ala Napster?
Purely hypothetically, lets say I have a :cough: friend that has hundreds of DVDs that he has ripped and would like to share them with his family. :cough cough - wow, gotta get that looked at: He might have a spare machine with some spare bandwidth and would like to make an invite only network to make it easier for his children to move movies to their iPhones. Additionally, his children may have ripped movies that he'd like to be able to browse as well. Obviously, open source freeware is top of the list for importance as well as security. Must be *nix.
Thoughts anyone?
He also might have a :cough: close friend :cough: who has 3/4 of a terabyte of ripped HD TV shows and DVD/Blu Ray movie rips.

just saw in my blog feeds that LimeWire just added private P2P network sharing. so you can build an invite only network.
its p2p though, which i think isnt what you are looking for. but easy for anyone to use.
