I've only ever used X10 and the Firecracker... worked like a charm. Considered writing my own interface, but there are many out there like http://php-x10.sourceforge.net/

Why would you go USB to reset a computer... one computer to turn the other off? Since you'll have a computer active to control the other one, the the X10 stuff would give you more flexibility and projection (reach)

i have a document on how to make your own usb devices if you like i can email it to you.

i have sensed input through homemade connectors i cannabilized old joysticks and used
a relay to trigger the joystick trigger and simply made a delphi(ok it was qbasic but still)
program to check for the joystick being pressed (in this case it was a relay closing the
switch) and from there execute other software based actions..

as for resetting the computer, im not sure what you need it for but a time delay 120v relay
a bit pricey but would work if you wired it into the power circuit of the computer you wanted to reset..when
you activate the time delay relay from say (a ringing phone line would do the trick) or a
home made usb device it would simply hold the power circuit closed for (x) seconds and
power it back on... if you had the computer set up to auto log in , etc it might work..

what are you trying to do?

but i would love to hear how you plan to reset your cable
modem and why you want to do it automatically..

im still waiting for an old coffee machine to hit my personal
junkyard so i can turn it into a cosmopolitan machine...
you know, dumping out FRIS: vodka , northland pomegranate
juice and SIMPLY limeade juice all in equal portions into my
martini glass (automatically poured across ice, of course)
