perhaps not ... but in my darkest moments of paranoia, the notion of an Orwellian CEO of Google and the rewriting of history (or other forms of censorship) become very real. The challenge today is not that they ARE doing it (although in CN they are to a certain extent) it's that in the wrong hands they really could.

I think it was a penetrating observation Nop.

It is now believed, that after having lived in one compound with 3 wives and never leaving the house for 5 years, Bin Laden called the U.S. Navy Seals himself.

I think it was a penetrating observation Nop.
I think you are making too much out of it perks Smiley.
It is not paranoia to think they are out to get you, they are  ROFLMAO ROFLMAO

This "rewriting history" as if it is a new thing that will happen in the future.
Probably oldest example of rewriting history. Old testament of the bible.
12 tribes with no land, decide they need some land. Unfortunately land is occupied with Canaanites.
12 tribes then kill all Canaanites because they where immoral and bad, then occupy land.

One of my favorite books is Julius Caesar's "conquest of gaul".
Again the only account we have is Julius's. Also his number 1 priority was to kill all druids, the only educated gauls etc.
Origionally the "book" was a series of propaganda dispatches sent to rome describing all the great things he did.

The mythology in USA about "biography" of George Washington,
The alamo, The causes of the american civil war. etc
Again not to pick on USA, just choosing examples we are familiar with.

Again the information is never 100% lost. There is always some trace of it.
But most people do not want to know the truth. But you can always find the truth if u look hard enuff.

Orwell is most famous for his 2 books "Animal Farm" and 1984.
To understand Orwell, first and for most he was an anarchist.
All of his books poke fun at some part of society etc.

From a personal perspective, i never believed that people do not want to know the truth.
But that is the bottom line, people enjoy being deluded and fooled.

From a personal perspective.
To paraphrase you, most important thing is yourself, family and close friends.
How can the "Orwellian Machine" be used against itself for personal profit.
Obviously a frontal attack will not work too hot Smiley.

I have mentioned this story countless times.
My father left czechoslovakia after WW2, my uncle stayed behind.
Both men did very well in thier respective environments.

My uncle being the smart man he was, found out the new regime placed a high value on culture and music.
He then decided that he should become a musician, since they got extra perks.
But then being a musician is hard work, you have to practice etc.
So somehow he got himself a job overseeing culture and music.
Ofcourse he had to travel a lot, and it is important he has a reliable and fast automobile.
So he went and got himself an Alfa Romeo. Ofcourse it is quite tiring driving such an automobile, and he had to have a good looking blonde assistant to help him on his journies. The sacrafices my uncle made for the people.
Then he found out that that westerners had a desire for eastern european antiques.
Fortunately czech craftsmen are very good, and could manufacture many antiques.
He then smuggled them out (as a cultural representive he often had to travel abroad to find out about "decadent" western capitalist culture).
The great part about those antiques is the authenticity could not be verified, since they origionated behind the iron curtain.

Ofcourse today my uncle is very old. But he now has seen the error of his ways. He now realizes that he was unknowingly duped into supporting an evil regime.
Fortuately my uncle is now a good capitalist who now uses a sports car to conduct good captitalistic buisness.

The "Art of war" is a very beautiful book also.
