AppleTVs will not operate in a headless mode. In other words, you've got to have it hooked up to a TV to kick over.

The problem, is that I have it running in several locations where it is simply being used as a music streaming device. (Don't ask why I don't use an airtunes ... it's because each zone MUST be able to play it's own thing). So if the box has trouble, or like last week when Apple sent out an upgrade, it needs to be rebooted and won't come all the way back up.

There is no composite, but there is component output. I have read that I can view B/W composite if I come out of the green channel. My thinking, therefore, is that if I could drop the resistance of the green channel output appropriately, I could spoof the box into thinking it's hooked up and it'd work headlessly. So a raw RCA connector and resistor should be my fix. Now to the "appropriate" part.

My thinking was that I'd check the resistance of the composite input on a normal TV when running, then use that to calculate what resistor I should put on the RCA, but I am ignorant here and am not sure how to calculate what the resistance should be. Is it as simple as, whatever my VOM says, I duplicate?

Thanks in advance, sorry for sounding like a complete eIdiot...

cant you do the same trick as on the mini?
use a hdmi>dvi>vga adapter and stuff a resistor into pins 2 and 7 on the VGA socket?

not sure about the component side though. I am think you can just stuff green into yellow and that will work. but it also might light shit on fire, who knows.

@ green -> yellow: yes, that's how I can see B/W composite. But there are no tubes/monitors at the @TV locations ... it needs to be headless.

Forgot about the HDMI->DVI->RGA->resistor hack, although that's a boatload of adapters ... I'll keep that in the back of my mind for if I must. I'm thinking about dead shorting the green today just to give'r a shot ... it's not really any voltage, so I can't imagine it hurting the @TV, but I don't know if that will give it the correct feedback to kick it over, either.

I'll post if I get anything out of it today. Should be interesting  Roll Eyes

no i meant pluging green from Atv into yellow on the same Atv.

though, now that you say it i think a resistor across the green channel is something I have seen before as well.

There also should be a single adapter solution. I just was logic-ing it out.

No yellow on the @TV - only component and HDMI. But given your thought, I was thinking a crossover from green into red or something ...

I'll get a portable extinguisher and give'r a whirl

im sorry green to red. being retarded.

but the short across green is sounding more familiar....

There has to be a voltage drop. so use a low resistor, i dont think you can just short it.
