http://www.wolframalpha.com/

Enter something like, "rainfall amazon basin" or "average height sierra nevadas" or "average length human penis" and watch it work.

I just read a writeup on it and it's something to behold. Frickin' Wolfram. The guy is like, you know, smart.

Yeah, I played with it when it debuted. It has some strong points that might make a good use of an api but it needs to bake another year before it's even close to mainstream, imo.

Nice.  Very nice.

@Close to mainstream - I'm not sure if actually being mainstream is as important these days as defining it

It's better with things that involve numbers.

My concern would be how Wolfram would approach monetizing it. If they use the price of their software to benchmark then they'll want $100/click.

i think that the engine by itself is not useful, except for shits and giggles with nerds.
Where it is useful though is to make search engines smarter about what the user is actually looking for.

kind of like in google how when you type 2+2 it gives you the answer, plus search results.

WolframAlpha is nothing more than computing search engine, just like it says on the page. I never understood why they wanted to call it "search engine" because it's not search engine but more of an fact finder. It doesn't even try to provide any information except what's "factual" according to their database. Needless to say that I find WolframAlpha really interesting in pointless kinda way.

Zactly.  Its usefulness is outside the standard SE realm.  Here's "rainfall amazon basin" on google, bing and wolf respectively:

@ room: NW ITTO: all good.

@ What's it for - I think, given that it's Wolfram, it's *about* research much more than monetization. Hell, he monetized Mathematica almost as a side thing because it was the problem and the solution for him, not the business.

I'm inclined to believe that this is his way of researching the outside of the computational envelope, more than it being another search engine. It'd be a really handy thing to have in a heads up display, voice activated for when you're just walking about. A great "also" tool.
