mysql is the most used

but is that just because it allows you to say LAMP

LAPP doesnt have the same ring to it..

with sun getting bought out - you still planning to stick to mysql, the new offshoots or just jump ship completely?

anyone actually using a paid for db?

for the longest time i used MS SQL for just about everything.  That was more because everything i did was in windows environments so it worked just ding dong dandy.  anymore I use MySQL for everything other than the old projects in the old environments that are still windows.

I use both MS and MY.

Unless sun decides to go totally profit on MySql, and then charges a retarded amount of money, I will stay there on linux.
Windows, I will stay in MS land.

The reality is that while MySQL is great, MSsql is the tits.
It is a beast, but when you have it on the right box, holy shit is that mother powerful.
Downside of course is the price... Needless to say I am always working on someone elses dime.
If they had a Small Biz type licensing scheme that got me no tech support, but all the features, for a few hundred, I would switch.

I use MySQL but if I need to go up it's Oracle. It's completely stupid, but I'd not use MSSQL simply on principal. It's a horrible and bad bias, but there you go.

Oracle made me want to beat sacks of kittens against a tree when I had to use it.  Granted, i was forced to use piece of shit ancient servers chocked full of the most horribly designed databases I have ever fucking seen and expected to build applications that performed.  See what working for the gov't gets you?

MSSQL I have always enjoyed working with other than the fact that they do one thing that is really, really stupid that MySQL does really well.  Can't for the life of me remember what it is off hand but I remember doing it with MySQL and being baffled as to why MS SQL didn't do it.

What i would like to know about Oracle is why i still have to write a trigger to do an auto-incrementing field instead of having something do it automatically.  I have been told that doing it with a trigger is more awesome but I just can't get on board with having to do extra work to accomplish such a simple task.  Mayhaps someone here can explain to this dirty old pirate why its more awesome that way.

time for a beer, finally.  f-today.

Bwwwwwaaaahahahaha!  Perfect.

>database

Don't laugh. I love manipulating flatfiles -usually several via some sort of pseudo-relational db. Usually generates static.
