I just stumbled upon it in my searches.
I personally use durus which is a python object database.

I just browsed the above, from my understanding tokyo cabinet can do similar things.
It has perl,ruby and lua binding.
So probably would not be too hard to make a PHP one.

And it mentions stuff like BTree and Hash Tables which are backbone of ODBM.
So i think it is like an ODBM or could be made into one pretty easy with a little ingenuity.
