Side question then, from a n00b in this arena - how do I hang on to my existing two apps (MyWi and My3G) so that when I get un-jailbroke during an update, then JB then want to reinstall?

assuming you have synced. They should be in the same folder with all your other apps. Then when you sync after JB, you can just re-select them. However, you should be able to download the two apps from wherever, again, and use your existing license?

Im probably going to wait to JB until after this upcoming update which will hopefully fix the proximity sensor issue.

Negatory. They show up as icons on the "palette" of the iPhone, but not in the list of potential apps. Looking in music/itunes/mobile applications they are not there... hmmm, best go do a bit of digging.

Oh man. Initial Googling for Backup Cydia Apps is ugly.

Good thing I've not paid yet (in the 10 day free trial) ... think I'll do the same as you and wait for the update. But there's got to be a smoother way than what is described out there ATM ...

Were you jailbroken? That's the main trouble. You'll need to return it completely to factory, and then upgrade. DO NOT restore from a previous backup because it will bring the problem back in.
