Alright laddie, I really like the looks of this:

http://cultofmac.com/installerapp-opens-iphone-to-all-apps-without-jailbreaking/9763

So, given that I could install any app on my phone without jailbreaking it, what would you recommend I install?

There are several already at the store NBs... I use one, but it is pathetic because the viewport is so small and when the keyboard is up on the screen, there's very little room to see what you are doing. I am hoping for one that is font-size configurable and I can hook a keyboard up to the phone.

LOL that's DAMN cool RC ... the last keyboard hack I saw was a trap of the underlying OS only when it's jailbroken... that's a flat out brilliant work around, albeit from the video it looks like you've got to be running THEIR application, so it's not a systemic fix.

The iPhone 3 OS is supposedly going to allow devs to talk to the butt-port, so this problem is going to be short lived. But I love seeing the fixes as people hack their way around the Apple bubble.

Off the top of my head, after jailbreaking one can:

copy and paste
"tether" one's phone

fairly easily. Also I installed the BSD subsystem, but then uninstalled it and installed Debian and apt-get (cydia I think it's called), because it's a much more mature package manager than installer.app and it is a well-managed repo.

The terminal app for Debian gave me a BASH terminal, and it automatically highlighted syntaxes on things like ls and on code inside of vim. Other than that, I haven't been jailbroken since probably mid-February '08 or so. I'm sure a lot's happened in the meantime.

Wow, anticlimax. I thought you were going to regale me with all kinds of blisteringly cool apps that I could now do. Looks like much of what you're doing now will be available by 3.0, so perhaps they've done an end-run on you. Bummer.  Undecided

Methinks I'll go have a lookee at what is out there anyway, gotta be some cool stuff. ALTHOUGH, a buddy of mine did this and got a nasty trojan that locked up his iphone - he can't even factory it from iTunes. Going to have to go beg at the feet of the "geniuses" I'm thinking. Poor bastard.

I haven't been jailbroken for quite some time Perks. I liked it a lot when I was able to do it, but I got paranoid that it would break when I needed it. I'm sure jailbroken phones are very stable now. They were quite stable then as well. There are loads of things you can do on a jailbroken iphone - it's pretty much just a linux computer with a number of unconventional methods of input and their concomitant APIs. Like I said, I'm not current in that particular scene, so I only know the things I could do that would have wowed you a year ago, not post-2.0

C'est bumer dood. Ah well. The new 3.0 software ought to offer enough toys and go fasts to keep interest piqued for a while.

No worries VS, just thought you were still hanging out there.

best solution would be teh 9" ipod touch (TBA this fall) and somehow using the DUN through bluetooth instead of tethering... does the ipod have bluetooth technology?  this would be sufficient screen real estate and a pretty kick ass hand held computing device... if only they would build an aircard and service right into it...screw the phone silliness....

Actually there is a rumor that Apple is maxxing out purchases of 10" touch panels from a Chinese manufacturer. Agree totally - if they go for a huge version of an iPhone, this makes a netbook look like hamburger. It'll be pricey, certainly ... but man would that be the kitten's whiskers.
