Oh yeah, I'm out there alright.

One of the things I am finding is the difference between being a user and converting.  Just being a user you don;t have to have a specific number with added services.  If you want your own number witht ehbells and whistles, the cost can drag down the economics unlesss you do a lot of calling or do a full fledged transition.  Then there are the gaps, there are always gaps.

For a long time, I have wanted my iPhone to just transform into a Skype handset for my SkypeIn line when I'm at home, and only take cell calls when I leave the house.

Ive got one of these and the range is incredible id say its good for about 1/4 mile
from the base... skype in/out skype to skype and land line usage.  ive got my land line
going through a magic jack.... skype really brought back the crank call for me
what with being able to make your number show up all funny if you choose..
or simply grabbing a new one for 3$ or so...

I like the phone cause it uses standard AAA rechargeable batteries  and
the standard headset ... clips nicely to shirt pocket or sleeve.
re: the batteries you can just keep four or six charged AAAs in your pocket and
keep using the phone all day without it having to be in the cradle..

It also is a dual line for land line (do they still exist?) phones...
but i find it fun to be sitting around the bbq
prank calling australian mcdonalds for 2 cents a minute or so...

"HEeesh BReyowns are a dooweluh!" "E Dewluah!"

There was an app at the iTunes store for a little bit that I thought was friggin' brilliant.

Essentially you registered locations that you hang at... my personal desktop, my notebook computer, a friends house etc. Then, based on the GPS in your phone, routed inbound calls to the appropriate node ie., could be your land land on your desktop, Skype on your notebook, another landline and a friends house or fallback to your cell number if you don't have Skype running on it. Got shut down lickety split by Apple and a host of concerned parties, for reasons I am unaware of. But I thought that this was an interesting first step to abstracting your location and the need to be copper-close.
