http://www.macports.org/

I've always wondered why Apple doesn't use a package repo or for that matter any sort of centralized package management. Ports (and Portage) is far and away my favorite package manager.

I have always had loads of problems with MacPorts but I do applaud to the fact that somebody is trying to do repo for Mac too. I love my Mac but I have never quite get it to bend for small console programs like Linux. God almighty I just complimented Linux for the first time in my life for something else than "good server platform", I must be going mad.

One of the things I LIKE about *nix is that I have to configure and compile apps myself (yes, I know VS, I don't HAVE to, but I like that level of control) ... so I DL the source for things and do it myself. The only problems are typically directory issues, or dependencies that the Mac doesn't come with by default and such - but then I know I have an executable that is precisely what I want.

That said, MySQL gave me some grief about 3 years ago and I was quite grateful that someone else had compiled it into an executable that I could just run...
