Perks and others who might be interested:

If you haven't seen Logmein Ignition for the iPad/iPhone yet, you definitely should check it out.  Basically, it lets you use your (remote) desktop or notebook PC or Mac from your iPhone/iPad (much better experience on the iPad, but very usable on both.)  You control the "mouse" and see everything just as on the screen of your computer.

It also lets you access sites that use Flash by running them on your remote Mac and just using your iPhone/iPad as a conduit.

You can run Mac/Windoze applications and use them from your iPad while out and about or traveling.

The iPhone/iPad app is $30, but well worth it.  In my testing, it does everything it says it should do and is very fast.  Now there's yet another reason why you don't need to bring a full computer along with you all the time...

Nice Davi8or - I've been using iRAPP server - it sucks horribly. I think I'll give this a try.

Let me know what you think.  I played with it extensively on the iPhone (controlling my Mac) and was impressed, even though the small iPhone screen makes for a less-than-ideal window into my much larger Mac screen.

The iPad 3G which I ordered more than two weeks ago is apparently sitting at the local FedEx Depot (damned holidays!) and should be delivered tomorrow, I can't wait.

Now we are talking... ipad 3g, 30$ a month no contract pay as you go
right on the ipad with your cc num and thin client fat connection to
whatever host you want...   now all we need is a vmware or parallels host
that will run a vmware or parallels image cheaply you can just put in the clouid
somewhere and you can develop on the ipad using os of your choice... just
keep track of the ipad and your office and beige boxes can disappear and
be replaced with a mai-tai and a lawn chair.

I use Desktop Connect. Been the best IMO.
Both vnc and rdp in the same package.

Also now uses google connect if you are so inclined to make finding your home computer and connecting to it easier. Kind of like gotomypc, but probably with more evil inside.

Obviously I don't use that. I just have a dyndns host and my router updates the ip.

@nutballs: Does Desktop Connect require VNC / TightVNC on your desktop machine?

I used TightVNC for many years but it was really slow.

Last year I installed LogMeIn Pro and it's fine and secure. I'm using it on my laptop when I'm travelling.

Ok, it's not free. You have to pay $69.95 / year, but it's worth the price.

nope, it connects natively to Macs via VNC, and Windows via RDP.
For connecting to a linux desktop though, i have no idea, havent tried.

RDP is pretty damn fast locally, VNC is a bit slow, but tolerable.

The worst speed I had was ipad-wifi->iphone-mywi->vpn-on-iphone->home-cable-modem->desktop.
it was still quite useable, though a little frustrating.

Today I used Windows, running on my Mac (via Parallels Desktop), from my iPad (via Logmein.)  Worked great.  Completely usable.

What will they think of next?
