My point is that your blanket approval of Apple and their product line simply lessens the impact of your argument.

LOL RC. The difference is that I look at all products and evaluate them for real value to (some person).
There is limited evaluation on the other side - it's simply that Apple sucks, for any number of reasons.

We all know that I really dislike Windows. But I am currently in a reasonably complex software deployment where Windows is far and away, the best tool for the job. And as we have it tweaked (NBs is working on it with me) it is really starting to be something special. As people of technology, I believe we are all better served by "stepping over the line" and seeing what value a product has, and why it was created in the first place, to try and gather the future into our mind's eye.

It's interesting to me when there's so much heat aimed at these people who brought GNU/Linux among other creations into the free world.  Perhaps it's because their efforts actually do impact their bottom line  Undecided

? ? ? Not sure what you mean here - there's disdain from MS and a certain level of acceptance and approval from Apple (NeXT legacy, certainly) but "heat" ? Not sure I understand you here.

As opposed to?

The "heat" from Microsoft is totally the same as Apple.  Microsoft has an open source division.  So an MS fanboi would claim that they're open source friendly.  MS is about as friendly with open source as a female black widow is with her spouse.  Apple leverages open source.  But bring in a real competitor (like Android) and Apple is a fast enemy

The difference between our arguments. You start from Apple is Wrong. I start from What Do They Offer and Why Is It Significant.

"Apple is a fast enemy?" You really think that Google is out to Do No Evil? Do you really find Google that much more acceptable in their behavior? If they're so wonderful, why don't they release the algo? Because it's their secret sauce, that's why. They release Android because they can get lots of free beta testing, then go try and dominate the market with it ... not because of some great love of open sourcing their stuff. Google is *every bit* as monopolistic as Apple or M$ in their own way, don't be fooled. Apple leverages open source, but they open source a lot of their work as well. Just like Google.

I'd never claim that M$ is open-source friendly, but I'd be OK saying Apple is open-source comfortable. They give and receive. Give to a point, anyway.
You want the source for Leopard. I want the source for the algo. There's no difference. It's secret sauce and they're not going to give it up.

Yesterday I figured out one target group that will LOVE iPad - comic book readers.

Think about it.. ebook readers are useless with PDF comic books because they are only images and like we know, ebook readers don't play so well with images and you can't zoom in/out fast and so on. And not to mention that there' no color in your average e-ink display. So what better way to consume pirated comic books than with iPad?

However it won't appeal to real fanatics who value physical thing itself because of the value of owning it or whatever reason they collect comic books. But for people like me who love comics but don't like buying them or actually storing them, iPad seems awesome comic book reader.

Just read an article to that very point K ... and lots of the comic book producers are already *all* over it.

And I am sure there will be a new set of graphic novels that will be "lightly animated"
