Not sure it's possible to be a great, legendary CEO without being a dick, at least part of the time.  Sad but true.

RIP Steve.  Watched the Apple memorial service video last night, it was both moving and interesting.

As for the CEO part, I strongly believe that stuff doesn't get done until someone gets mad.  But as for being a dick, that long precedes his CEO days.

"to baby Lisa, Steve Jobs was and is, for better or worse, dad.

However, it took two years before Jobs would acknowledge that Lisa was his child, going so far as to swear in a court document that he was "sterile and infertile, and as a result thereof, did not have the physical capacity to procreate a child." While Jobs reaped the rewards of owning a burgeoning technology company, his baby and her artist mother subsisted on welfare."

Looks like I started a Steve-is-a-dick meme.

"Jobs’s perfectionism and design sense helped establish Apple’s signature “iBrands,” but these traits also transcended, to some extent,  a toxic personality that could have served as a model for the Kevin Spacey character in the movie “Horrible Bosses.” In the film, Dave Harken implies that a promotion awaits one of his employees but ends up awarding it to himself. The Jobs equivalent: stiffing early Apple employees out of stock options when the company first went public. The guy was a…"

And I'm ROFLMAO at the inescapable and hardly unpredictable Jobsian backlash.

I think somewhere between He Was Edison and He Was Hannibal Lector is the truth. There're a lot of stories about me and my ex. There are definitely people that RELISH the opportunity to disparage the guy. And the apostles have canonized him, if not given him full sainthood already. I don't put much stock in either camp.

But it is certainly true that it takes a certain personality to do what he did. From my perspective, the world has been given a multitude of gifts that we would not have had, were it not for his genius and drive. And the cost of that was certainly a normal home life, love life and personality. I think we can be grateful for his time on the planet and still understand that to be who he was / do what he did was perfect enough.
