I suppose this is a little thumbing-of-the-nose to those who poo-pooed the iPad and discounted the initial demand as merely being from fanbois wearing blinders...

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/20/ipad_has_91_consumer_satisfaction_demand_greater_than_pre_launch.html

Demand for the iPad has increased significantly since introduction, and they are now selling more iPads than Macs in the US.  At least one analyst is predicting 8 million iPads will be sold in 2010.  http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/20/apples_ipad_believed_to_be_outselling_macs_in_the_us.html

Yes, lots of people bought them sight-unseen.  What this latest data shows is that even more people want to buy them once they HAVE seen and used the device.

I placed my order last week.  I was gonna wait a while longer, but I keep thinking of all the situations where the iPad would be useful to me.

It's on par with what I kind of thought might happen based on my experiences. Everyone is interested in it. And everyone asks a "well what about _____" type question which I usually have an answer for. I then ask what they use their busted old laptop for, and they usually reply with a list of iPad capable things.

Very startling though to see it outpacing actual Mac computers.

Yup.

Honestly it replaces about 98% of what I do with my notebook, and even quite a bit of my daily requirement to get to the Box Box. As well as perhaps 40% or so what I did with the iPhone. It's going to carve into a lot of marketshares ... even Apple's own.

I don't think apple would cry a single tear if no one every bought another Mac, but instead bought ipads. They make residual profits on apps, and they will of course be on a 1 year upgrade cycle for new features...

If you've gotta compete with someone, competing with yourself is a pretty good way to go...
